Halls Soothers Throat Tablets
Advantages: Ease sore throats
Disadvantages: Not for severe sore throats but will still ease the discomfort
I've been quite persecuted recently with a cold and sore throat that has lingered, mainly due to my two sons reinfecting me with their own colds. Although my cold has only been mild my throat has suffered the most with a silly scratchy tickle that has felt sore but not severe and I've found myself buying medicated throat sweets to help alleviate any discomfort. I tend to suffer from sore throats quite a lot, though when mild I find Halls Soothers to help take away some of the discomfort that is associated with painful throats, and because of this I tend to have a pack stored in *just in case*.
Halls Soothers are medicated sweets that have a liquid centre which claims to be both soothing and made using real fruit juice. They are available in packs featuring 10 individually wrapped sweets and can be bought in four flavours including:
*Peach & Raspberry
Availability wise they can be bought from most shops ranging from chemists to Supermarkets, corner shops to garage forecourts and as they are 'Britain's best selling sore throat sweet' they are readily available from most shops. Price wise they can range between as little as 40p per pack to where I've seen them selling for £1.25 on amazon so it really depends on where you shop as prices vary quite drastically. I tend to pick up a couple of packs when I'm in my local Superdrug as they cost 49p for one pack or 85p for two making them an economical buy and handy to keep in my bag if my throat starts feeling scratchy or sore.
Do they work?
I've used these type of throat sweets for years to help take the edge of sore throats with Halls Soothers being my preferred choice, and whilst I feel they certainly help ease any discomfort this is all they do as they don't numb the pain like more medicated products such as Strepsils do. I regularly buy all four of the flavours and whilst they all do the same job I tend to opt for the Raspberry & Peach or Blackcurrant simply because I prefer these two flavours and they have a much more natural taste whereas the Strawberry in particular is far too sweet and very synthetic tasting so I only buy this flavour if it is the only one available as a last option.
*The flavour I currently have 'on the go' is the Blackcurrant so my review will be focused slightly more on these as opposed to the other flavours, though at the end of the day they are the same product with a different taste.
On opening the dark purple wrapper the sweets are easily accessible and each one is individually wrapped in a slightly transparent white wrapper. The wrappers are very easy to remove and unlike some similar products they don't stick to the sweet and come away quite easily when unwrapped. The sweets themselves are very appealing and instantly emit a strong fruit like scent - in this case being blackcurrant with its appearance matching in a dark purple coloured outer shell.
On popping one of these throat sweets into my mouth the blackcurrant is instantly soothing and the sweets themselves are just the right size, unlike Jakeman's which I always feel are too big and cumbersome. Soothers are small oval shaped sweets which start to melt when sucked, and once the crisp outer shell is broken the rich gooey liquid centre is incredibly soothing indeed.
I like these throat sweets as I feel they coat the throat sufficiently to help ease discomfort but they wont eradicate a sore throat, though to be fair they don't claim to either. Soothers are easy to carry due to the compact packaging and easily fit in most bags or even pockets and for the price they are ideal to have to help soothe a sore throat. I really like the fact that they don't leave my tongue sore as some boiled sweets can do and because they don't contain any antiseptic properties they also don't interfere with my taste buds for too long like Dequacaine has a habit of doing.
I would highly recommend these, though for more scratchy throat irritations as they will have very little impact on severe sore throats. They offer a slight relief, which when your throat is sore is a god send no matter how long the effects last.
5/5 from me.
Summary: Give temporary relief for scratchy sore throats and are my no1 choice of sore throat sweet
