      Disadvantages

      A cheap cough reliever.

When I get a cold I always seem to get a cough following on at the end which is the most annoying thing ever and interupts most days when I least want it to (presentations, meetings etc.) I also cough after swallowing things wrong but thats a completely different matter. So I like to keep some medicine in the cupboard for when the evil cough strikes.

I searched for some cheap medicine when I was in my local Tesco as it was just for the cupboard and I found this mentholated bronchial balsam for 99p, result!

The medicine comes in a 200ml brown glass bottle which is slightly transparent. The lid is metal and requires the first twist to break the seal which can be a little awkward at first, also beware of getting medicine around the edge of the bottle as this can make the lid stick to the bottle and make it harder to unscrew. The label is a silvery/grey and teal and has the usual Tesco logo to the top. The medicine contains menthol, aniseed oil and capsicum and in each 5ml spoon serving relieves coughs, colds and cattarh in a non drowsy formula.

The back of the bottle has warning to adhere to before use such as not using if allergic to ingredients, if intolerant to sugar or with diabetes. Basically if you are unsure make sure you speak to your doctor before taking the mixture.

The doses are one to two 5ml spoons for children aged 6-12 every two to three hours and for adults and children over 12 the dosage is two to three 5ml spoons.

The medicine is a thick brown sugary mixture and smells very strongly of menthol and aniseed. When I taste the medicine it is very strong and the menthol comes down my nose and makes my airways feel cold and clear. The thickness of the medicine means that if you have a sore or scratchy throat it sticks nicely and makes a soothing coating adding to the relief. I found the soothing aspect for a sore throat to last longer just before bed and help me to go to sleep as through the day I drink more and obviously it wears off. Initially the medicine will make you cough more especially if your cough is productive as it is clearing the chest.

For 99p I highly recommend this medicine for having in the cupboard as it definitely helps to soothe the most irritating of coughs.

      Good medicine on the cheap!

This past week I've had a terrible cold once again! With a bad immune system I always seem to be coming down with something or other and this cold has been terrible and one I'm still having trouble shaking still!

Knowing that my Dr cant do much about it, when I was just becoming ill I popped to my local Tesco store with my mate as she was coming down with it at the same time as me and so we pooled our cash and stocked up on stuff to help us out.

      The Packaging:

The bottle holds 200ml of the medicine and it comes in a dark brown but rather see through glass bottle with a white screw on/off lid to the top of it and around the bottle there is silver and turquoises label around it and to the front of that we are told that it is Tesco mentholated Bronchial Balsam 'Menthol 1mg, Aniseed Oil 3.5ml and Capsicum Tincture 25mcl Per 5ml' and that its to help with 'Relieving coughs, colds, catarrh & sore throats, none drowsy' and the size is stated as I have listed already. Other information on the back of the bottle includes being told a bit about the product, dosage advice is given as are warnings and the ingredients and contact details for Tescos. Informative enough bottle of medicine this is which of course it needs to be!

      Dosage Advice:

      Liquid for oral use.
Adults and children over 12 years : Take two or three 5ml spoonfuls (10ml to 15ml).
Children from 6 to 12 years: Take one or two 5ml spoonfuls (5ml to 10ml).
The above doses may be taken every 2-3 hours.

      My Opinion On The Medicine:

This offers really good temporary relief for sore throats in particular. The dark brown medicine is thickish and tastes sweet and with a strong aniseed flavour with the menthol added which also temporarily soothes the throat and opens up the airways! The flavour is pleasant but strong and like I keep saying this really does only give temporary relief! However that relief is temporary and this offers immediate and effective results however those results, apart from it clearing my nose only lasts a few minutes even though I took three 5ml spoonfuls every 2 hours and on the hour for days!

The nose clearing though I found with that dose was very helpful as I was rather stuffed and bunged up till taking this and I didn't suffer with that although my sore throat and things wasn't given too much help sadly.

All in all though this is a good enough medicine. It sooths the throat and makes it less dry and stopped me coughing for a short time and as I have said this did keep my stuffy nose at bay for the duration of taking it if nothing much else!

A good buy, but not a miracle cure this is great stuff that only costs 98p a bottle and is available from Tescos and from Tesco.com
