Tixylix cough syrups have been around for years and years we used this for our daughter when she had coughs and colds. Now we are using it with our granddaughter who like most young kids seems to pick up coughs and colds fairly regularly. There is nothing worse than seeing a young snotty nosed kid coughing, spluttering and grizzling and clearly miserable with a hacking cough and quite obviously not very happy. Most cough mixtures are rather soothing as opposed to curative treatments and if you can ease the discomfort and rotten feeling for a child hopefully they will be less inclined to be in discomfort and miserable.
Most children will pick up coughs and colds as their body is susceptible to picking these up like no bodies business. Most coughs and colds are caused by a virus and generally it is not usually necessary for antibiotics as most antibiotics will not treat a viral infection. It is prudent to allow the child to develop immunity against coughs and colds as although they can be unpleasant once a certain virus has been contracted immunity is usually acquired against that particular viral strain. However if it is accompanied by swollen glands very high temperature and does not clear up after a few days then it is wise to check with your GP especially if the child is having difficulty swallowing or breathing.
We usually keep a bottle in the cupboard so that when she is with us we can give it to her when she is poorly. The small brown 100ml bottle comes in a box with the words Tixylix toddler syrup and a picture of a child on a swing! It has a child proof cap which needs to be depressed and twisted to remove it. Inside the box there is also a dosing spoon with 2.5ml and 5ml measures. It is recommended from 1 year old and upwards. The cough mixture contains no colourings and is sugar free. It contains glycerol which acts by lubricating the throat to help ease discomfort. It is quite palatable and flavoured with blackcurrant which you can smell and is fairly sweet tasting. As my granddaughter is only two years old the recommended dose is 2.5 mls up to four hourly. It can be given up to six times a day maximum. She does not mind taking this medicine and quite willingly will open her mouth to take it.
Does it work?
We found it does help soothe the sore throat and reduces her dry tickly irritating cough. It enables her to get some relief from the constant coughing and irritation that disturbs her when she is trying to nap. As I said previously it is not a curative medicine but more to help relieve the symptoms of sore throat and irritating cough.
Do I recommend it?
Yes I do as there is nothing worse than having a miserable child clinging on to you and if it helps then that has got to be a good thing. It is available from all chemists and also most supermarkets. Expect to pay around £2.50 in Asda or £2.99 in Boots. No guessing where we buy it!
It's one of those sounds that you just don't want to hear from your young children. *cough cough cough* It's that really horrible dry hacking cough that seems to really upset them and irritate their throats. This product from the well-known brand, Tixylix, is designed to help soothe that.
Suitable for children between 3 months right up to 5 years which means, in my house, I only need this one item to suit both my children. (One is 3 and the other is 5)
It comes in a glass bottle with the usual childproof safety top where you push down and unscrew. The smell of it is a very strong blackcurrant one which really hits you when you open the bottle. This is obviously to make it taste better to the child so they don't mind having it. My 2 have never refused to take the dosage when needed. The medicine is colour free as well as being sugar free.
A doubled-ended plastic measuring spoon is provided with it so that you can give the correct dose with ease. One end has 2.5ml and the other 5ml.
It comes with clear to understand instructions although the writing is quite small.
The dosage instructions are easy as you can give between 3-4 times daily and allow 3-4 hours between doses.
3months to under 1 year have ONE 5ml spoonful
1 year to 5 years have TWO 5ml spoonfuls
Overall, I won't hesitate to purchase this again when it runs out. It is perfect for the task in hand and rapidly gets rid of that *cough cough cough* sound that annoys so much. My daughter's cough was gone within 24 hours when using this but obviously every child is different.
I bought this from a supermarket for around the £2.50 mark which I think is a very reasonable price for it working so well.
Like with all medicines, please check the ingredients list when purchasing.

with my son going to nursery, it is often that he comes home with the sniffles or a cough. I am not one for continually taking him to the Dr and will try the over the counter remedies first.
Around 3 months ago, he seemed to have a cough that lingered for around 2-3 weeks. He had no fever and was eating and drinking normally, so i knew that it wasnt anything serious, but wanted to relieve this cough, especially at night time when these things seem to become worse.
I found the tixylix toddler syrup which claims that
: 3 months to 5 years
: sugar free
: colour free
: blackcurrant flavour
Tixylix is a range of products specially formulated to relieve symptoms in children such as cold symptoms, cough symptoms, and nasal drops. This product can be bought in the larger supermarkets and pharmacies and cost around £3.05.
The toddler syrup is packaged in a box with blueish colouring and writng and has a picture of a child on a swing on the front. It claims " it soothes and relieves dry, tickly coughs" and contains glycerol. The outer box also gives some general advice on how you can help to shorten the life of your childs symptoms also, such as promoting fluids and keeping your child warm. The directions on using the product is on the box, but can also be found around the bottle of suspension too.
The bottle is dark brown in colour and made of glass. This is completed with the white safety cap you would expect to see on childrens medicines. Each 5 ml spoonful contains .75ml of glycerol which helps to lubricate the throat and is a mild product for your child. Glycerol is low in toxicity and helps promote smoothness and lubrication. You are able to administer this to your child 3-4 times a day and the amount varies depending on the age of your child.
Now the liquid is opaque and smells of a sweet blackcurrant cordial. when given regularly i have found that this is really effective and ceratinly helped at night time, the most symptomatic time for coughs.
I havent found a problem with my son taking this when he has had a cough and find that he certainly coughs less often, which of course in turn helps with a better nights sleep and for him to have a beetr appetite thus sppeding up his recovery as it were.
All in all well used product in my house that is effetcive and reasonably priced.
