Vicks First Defence
Advantages: Seems to stop colds and lessen the symptoms
Disadvantages: There's no way of knowing whether you would have caught a cold anyway!
Because I work with children, I am constantly picking up colds and seem to suffer from one straight after another. My mother, who works in the same environment, recommended that I try First Defence by Vicks so I popped to Boots and bought it.
What does it do?
First Defence is a micro-gel nasal spray, The product claims to fight the cold germs before they can have an effect and begin multiplying. It therefore promises to stop a cold from appearing in the first place.
How does it work?
The product works its way deep into the nasal cavities. The droplets catch and trap the germs, allowing the body to remove them before they can cause a cold. The product also contains natural plant extracts to make the droplets even more effective.
When do you use the product?
The product can be used in two ways. You can use it as a preventative measure when you are in an environment with others who have a cold so that you prevent the cold from starting in the first place. You can also use it when you get the first symptoms of a cold, therefore preventing it from becoming any worse.
How do you use the product?
The product is applied by inserting the tube of the bottle up the nose and spraying two or three squirts up each nostril and you need to do this about four times a day. You need to continue to do so for two days after the symptoms subside. You keep your head upright so you don't have to tilt your head back.
Who can use the product?
The product is suitable for adults and children over the age of twelve. Children under twelve should not use the product.
Packaging and Price
The product comes contained within a lovely shiny blue and white box. Inside is a translucent brown glass bottle so you can see how much of the product you have left. The nozzle of the bottle is about two centimetres long and it is protected by a plastic cap. Inside the box there is a leaflet with instructions and further information about the product.
The product is quite expensive and mine cost me around £7. For that money, I received 15ml of the spray. It can be bought from department stores such as Boots and also from large supermarkets. It can also be purchased from a variety of online websites.
Spraying something up your nose is never going to be an enjoyable experience but it isn't an entirely unpleasant one. The nozzle feels comfortable up the nostril but I don't like to push it up to far. The spray has quite a good range on it so it does get shot up quite far and you can feel this to some degree. It has an aroma that is a subtle version of the Vicks Vapour but it isn't as strong as the real thing thankfully. Because the product is a gel, it doesn't drip back out of the nose straight away.
It's hard to say whether a product of this type works. I have used it when members of my family have a cold and I haven't developed one myself after using the spray but that's not to say that I would have caught one anyway. I have also used it when I get a picky throat, which is usually the first symptom of a cold for me, and a cold hasn't got any worse. The product seems to lessen the severity of a cold but I don't how severe it would have got without using the spray. Nevertheless, my colds have become less frequent and less severe since using the spray so take from that what you will.
All in all, this is a handy product to have with you to keep colds at bay and to make sure that symptoms are less severe and that they disappear faster. There is no way of saying what would've had become of a cold had you not used it but it seems to be working on me so I will continue to carry this one around with me in my handbag and I would repurchase it once it's gone.
Summary: A handy nasal spray that kills cold germs before they can develop
