Advantages: Good balance transfer rate when i got it

Disadvantages: Not accepted everywhere

I have an American Express Nectar card and whn i got it i used it to balance transfer at a rate of 5.9% for the life of the balance transferred which was really good for me at the time.

The card is purple in colour with the American Express logo on the bottom right hand side and the nectar logo in the corner. You can earn Nectar points on any balance transfers and purchases you make.

When i first got it i made quite a few Nectar points using the card which was really handy but now that i use it less i don't make so many but as they say every little helps!

The only problems if you only carry an American Express card (which i wouldn't recommend) is that a number of places don't accept it...it does seem to be more widely accepted now but for a long time i would have to ask in restarants and bars particularly and few accepted it - i think this has changed now.

One thing to remember with an American Express card is that the security number (if you need to use it for over the phone or online purchases) is the four digits on the right above the long card number - if you give the last three on the back as standard with other credit cards it will get declined - this happened to me a few times so i'm just warning you in advance!

Now the rate is at 19.9% i use the card for occasional purchases and when travelling abroad but i always pay it off within the interest free period or i could end up paying a lot of interest. I still make some Nectar points but not as many as when i first had the card.

If you need to call American Express about a complaint on your card be prepared for them to take a while - although very friendly they can take ages to locate the correct person to deal with your problem and since the credit crunch they are forever changing credit limits etc which can be a pain.

Summary: Good for some people - depends what you are looking for from a card
