Advantages: Cool, its blue and you get a penny back for every pound you spend.

Disadvantages: It is impossible to actually get this card. Does it exist?

I would love to be able to give you a list of the wonderful benefits of American Express. The card with the impressive reputation, the wonderful blue decorative card which looks so cool as you pass it over the counter with a look that says hey I'm with American blue.

Like it or not it definitely gives off a statement. It shouts that you are professional, modern and credible financially. When I first saw a friend use one abroad I thought i want one of those not because it looked so cool but more to the point you received a penny back for every pound you spent. That can add up to quite alot of dosh if you use it on a regular basis.

So I applied on line thoroughly excited on 6 January 2001. New year, new credit card. As they are well respected they are one of the harder ones to obtain credit from as they do numerous checks on your credit history and via your employers. I had no problem with that. I've nothing to hide.

Trouble was 4 weeks later I was beginning to get a little paranoid. No word as yet. I decided to take the bull by the horns.. and call them. I spoke to a nice young lady who said 'we are still waiting for a reference from your employer!' Rolling my eyes and completely frustrated and annnoyed I frogmarched myself into the boss's office the next day.

After ranting and raving for 10 minutes that he was quite happy to have me work all hours of the day, at weekends and underpay me he was now inefficiently delaying my ability to have a credit card blah blah. I noticed his perplexed expression. Ooops he had never received anything. Apologising profusely I backed out of his office hoping this had not effected his opinion of me for a future reference!

Again back on the phone to American Express. I spoke to a nice young man he said 'I'm so terribly sorry madam I'll put one in the post today for you.' Utterly placated by his dulcit tones I thought that was it. My mind was at rest afte
r all I'd heard they are one of the most professional credit card companies worldwide. I awaited my blue card with baited breath.

4 weeks later. Still nothing. Still no credit card. I crept into my boss's office bowing and scraping this time...to no avail he'd heard nothing and pointed out was I sure it wasn't a figment of my imagination that I had applied. I was beginning to wonder.

Back on the phone AGAIN to American Express another man not so nice this time as I was really starting to be P***** off and I think he detected it in my tone. 'WHERE IS MY AMERICAN BLUE?' No guesses for the reply. 'We are still awaiting your employers reference.' AAAAAH! I explained the situation through clenched teeth biting back my sarcasm. 'I'm terribly sorry madam' he gushed sugarcoating me with his seemingly genuine concern I will fax it through to your employer by the end of the week.'

Hurray. Progress. I could feel the card almost within grasp. Not long now. I daydreamed of my first purchase and how I would whip out my blue card and dazzle the check out assistant with my financial importance.

Trouble is that was 3 weeks ago and I am still waiting.....I dare not pick up the phone for fear of blasting the customer service guy into outer space. I am no longer feeling the power of blue I am seeing red and it is not a pleasant sight.

American Express
you have made me blue
you never deliver
when you say you will do
I am sick to the back teeth
of thinking of you
I flushed all your leaflets
down my work place's loo
I am deeply disappointed
and will never recommend you
you are worse than a bad case of flu....

Yep I know its a terrible poem. Poetry has never been one of my strong points but there again American Express deserve it. I rest my case for now. I will call them again this week and will update you all on the outcome....but for now I
9;M STILL WAITING!!!

7 May 2001
Letter dated 4 May 2001.
'Dear Miss Merrey,
We are unfortunately unable to process your application as we have not received a reference from your employer to date. Please can you contact your employer and return this information to us asap.'
AAAAAAAAHHHHHH! I totally and utterly give up.

Hi, I recently applied for Amex and had no further questions from them. Filled the form, posted it and a couple of weeks later it dropped through the letter box.
That makes five I have now and must add
that it was the easiest to obtain. The others either phoned me or requested further information on paper. Also I'm not
a credit card flasher, just use it for internet purchases or other out of the ordinary transactions. I'm also medically retired which I thought would have been an obstacle, it was never questioned.
I couldn't rate it yet as I only have it about a week and not a chance to test it yet.

Sorry to hear about your experience with American Express. I've had a Blue card for a few months and it does look cool, the application process was not exactly painless. Almost a month after I applied, I got a call from Amex saying that I had been approved and apologies for the delay but they hadn't noticed that I already have a green card (even though the A/C number was on the application form) and they went through the whole credit checking process even though the didn't need to, apparently!!!

Rachel, I forgot to ask, I looked at your profile (hope you dont mind) and you said you travelled for 9 months last year or the year before, it could be a condition why Amex has reject your application. I know AMEX can be handy for holidaying but there might be something about you having moved away from the shores that dont match up to their requirement. I still think its silly though for declining you.
