Advantages: Preens you vanity, Makes you appreciate other cards!

Disadvantages: Expensive, Terrible Service, Fails to deliver on promised levels of service

The Centurion card promises unprecedented levels of service. However, I have been left very disappointed by it. Its customer service is terrible, the staff are rude, arrogant and patronising, and the number of retailers accepting Amex is still limited.

I have been a customer with Amex since 1996 and was recently invited to pay £700 for the privilege of using their black centurion card. As I had used my Platinum card extensively (at times more than £10,000 per month) it was good to know that there were people to help me with travel arrangements and insurance.

However, the UK centurion card has very few of the deals offered to the American customer; no airline membership schemes, no upgrades on the major UK airlines, no upgrades with the major UK hotels, and unable to get tables in some of the good London restaurants. So what makes it worth £700? I am really not sure.

Indeed, I have been unable to get any upgrades of hotel visits or flights, even when they are full fare business class.

Recently I tried to make a purchase to find a stop had been put on my account. I was very angry and it took several phone calls to try and find out what was going on. The Centurion 'team' kept me on hold for what seemed like hours and passed me from department to department, and not return calls they said they would. It turns out that my bank had messed up an electronic transfer, so Amex stopped my account. Was this for a vast sum of money? No, it was for a paltry £300. I had never been late with a payment, and they had not contacted me to find out if anything was wrong (although they claim they tried to phone me, but they must have been too bashful to leave a message).

The Platinum team made regular contact when there was unusual activity on my account. But this centurion team- representing the pinnacle of exclusivity and customer service manages to annoy and alienate its most valuable customers. So is it worth £700? Ce
rtainly not and I will not be renewing my membership. If you like Amex, stick with Platinum. They offer inclusive travel insurance, upgrades etc.. and the concierge service at a fraction of the price.

Stay away from this- if your vanity demands you have a status symbol, there are better ways to spend your cash!

I agree that the AMEX cardholder in the US seems to get a much better deal as far as benefits which come with the card - not to mention lower annual fees! The same can also be said for their cash-back blue card, which again is much more rewarding for US cardholders (up to 5% cash-back). You're right that this card is not value for money by any stretch of the imagination and represents only an ostentatious status symbol (which frankly most people wouldn't recognise anyway)

The Centurion card seems to have let you down this side of the pond. However, in the US it gets full marks as the service is better and there are a lot more perks - such as upgrades on Concorde when flying to London [BA] and Paris [Air France]. Amex is well known – in the US more so – for not giving members an inch when it comes to repayments. The fact that is was your banks mistake should fix the problem and perhaps your attention should be directed at getting a small cash gift from your bank as compensation for the inconvenience caused. It’s such a small complaint, as a Centurion card holder, you were treated quite well! Their usual response is to get heavy with the debt collection agencies straight away. Failing that, the four big banks such as Barclays and Natwest are launching their own “black” credit cards to compete with the Amex Centurion. The qualifying criteria is a salary of £60K +. I don’t expect this to be a problem for you as the qualifying salary for the Amex Centurion is a minimum of £150,000 annually…
