I got my first barclaycard credit card when I graduated from university. The application process was very quick and I got a decision within minutes. The card always has a lot of good offers such as 0% balance transfers for 1 year and 0% on purchases for 6 months etc. I have used this card to Loan myself money interedt free on several occasions including for holidays and Christmas presents. You gave to be disciplined and sensible tho as the money needs to be payed back eventually.
The service from Barclaycard is really good. I have telephoned them on several occasions when I have either lost my card or forgotten my pin etc. they talk you through things very clearly and are polite and really helpful. It does not take long to get through to them on the phone which is one of my frustrations with other card companies. Barclaycard has a very clear and easy to use automated call service which puts you through to the right person quickly and effectively.
Another great thing about there service is there online structure. When you login there website is so easy to use and I can navigate it really easily. If you have forgotten your pin you can find it online. You can request increased credit limits, balance transfers, cash in your account etc at the click of a button. You can easily download and review your statements on the wrbditecand the HELP pages are actually really well written and useful.
By far the Best credit card provider out there with regards to service.
I first took out a Barclaycard Credit Card about thirteen years ago and it's the only credit card I use now. Over the years I have gone from having a regular card to a Gold card, a Graduate card and I now have a Platinum card.
I have had some issues with the card over the years. The first year I had the card I did not receive a statement and was charged £25 late fees for not paying on time. I believe this charge is now around £12. I have also had the card blocked after my spending was flagged as being unusual.
I have also recently been a victim of online card fraud. I do feel the way the issue was dealt with could have been much better. Firstly I didn't receive notification that my card had been stopped. Then when I rang the company the member of staff spoke in very poor English. He went over my transactions with me but actually rounded up some of the transaction amounts to the next pound which was extremely confusing! He eventually confirmed all of my authorised spending but somehow failed to tell me about the fraudulent transactions and then reactivated my card, allowing the fraudulent transactions to go through! I eventually got this sorted out and the company sent me a 'claim form' which I had to fill in and return. They agreed the card details had been stolen and deleted the transactions from my account within a month of the event. This limited my stress about the matter a lot!
I have had no other problems with the card. I get a monthly statement by email. This is encrypted so you need a password to access a PDF file. Then you can pay in a bank or online. The statements are always very well written with full information about when and where each transaction took place.
These credit cards are of course widely accepted and are convenient to use. You can withdraw cash from an ATP with these cards but I believe there is a small charge to do so. I personally do not use my credit card in this way.
I would definitely recommend this card to anyone. I have found that the bank are very helpful in giving you a card that suits your needs. The company are generally very easy to deal with although some call centre staff need some extra training, in my opinion!
I originally took out my Barclaycard because it has a permanent low interest rate (6.9%). I've probably had it now for a good 5 years, if not more.
Over the years I've had lots of other cards, and I do look out for deals. For example, I took out a Tesco Credit Card because they had a 0% opening offer, then paid for large chunks of my wedding on it. Meaning lots of Clubcard points and no interest. I kept my Barclaycard as a back up really due to the low interest rate and the brilliant Barclaycard Online (the website is really great) but it hadn't been used in a long time and I was thinking of closing it.
Then when I got married last year and changed my name with Barclaycard they sent me a huge bunch of flowers and an equally huge box of chocolates. To me that was really lovely, thoughtful customer service and this kept me with them a little longer.
Then a couple of months ago I decided that as it wasn't being used I should really close it, as the unused card sitting there isn't great for credit ratings. On calling Barclaycard they offered me 0% on purchases for 12 months. As I was about to book a holiday I took them up on the offer and used it to book my holiday, so they have kept me as a customer for a little longer.
The one niggle I do have is the call centres. They are not UK based and on calling them I found it difficult to understand the person on the other end of the phone and vice versa.
My experience with Barclaycard has always been really good, and I can't fault them on anything major. I feel valued as a fairly long-term customer.
BarclayCard are OK. They have their moments like everyone else I suppose but they seem far more stable than other credit card companies I've used who are CONSTANTLY changing terms and conditions so you haven't a clue how to administer your account. I'm convinced some companies do this hoping you will pay late, not notice some important small print (my eyes are fine but one credit card company sends documents with fonts and print that is unreadable to my eyes .... maybe I need glasses)
I am writing this review now since my BarclayCard internet access has become pretty much unusable for the last 4 days or so (June 5th to 9th 2011). I put a value on my time and if I have to use a lot of time administering small payments, the card starts to look very expensive for me to run. I haven't had more than about £550 owing on the card for years but, since I work mostly abroad, I am stuck with administering my BarclayCard account online and, to cut a long story short, my BarclayCard will be dormant until the web access improves or until I actually get around to finding another card.
BarclayCard recently re-designed their web site. I had a look at my pages and saw no bills due and logged off. Next time I spoke to my great but elderly Mum in the UK she was worried. BarclayCard had been on the phone and were supposedly chasing me for a tiny amount of money.
I am now convinced the web site has been re-designed to make it more difficult for you to see what actions you need to take so BarclayCard can add late payment fees when they don't get their money and having the web site down at critical periods, or not behaving also means more late payments. Even if you get your late payment refunded after complaining the web site didn't work, it still took YOUR expensive time to fix the problem.
I have received no reply to my complaints to BarclayCard unless they reply to complaints emailed from abroad by sending letters to your home address.
While I'm at dooyoo I should see who DOES provide good credit card services. Co-op?

ABSOLUTELY THE WORST!!!3 and half years after CLOSING the account and paying the whole account, I started receiving calls asking me to pay +200£ - and after more than one month nobody has been able to tell me why!Calling their customers services has already cost me more than 40£, and so far they have been totally useless - quite often they slam down the phone without saying anything, and every time that I talk to them they say different things, or make false promises ("we will call you back with more details", "we will send you a letter", "we will stop calling you asking for a payment").STAY AWAY!
I had a Barclaycard that was sitting dormant for a while - I basically used it to transfer a balance and then once the interest free period was up I changed it again. Recently I paid for a holiday and wanted to balance transfer again, but did not want the prospect of having to get more credit cards, I re-applied for a log in for on line banking and was very surprised. The website has changed and the site is great, really easy navigation and a great look. There was an option to apply for balance transfers on line so I selected it and to my amazement they offered my 0% until January, which for an existing card I thought was pretty good. I needed a slightly bigger credit limit and on line there was a button to press to increase the limit, I did this and was accepted and had the funds immediately. On line it also shows your spending patterns it graphs etc which is quite cool. The security is also good with detailed security options available. They have also automatically added me for Barclaycard freedom, which is a kind of reward scheme, so I get points on spending. This is not as good as some other cards but it is better than they had before. The big down side is that they don't have all UK call centres, which can make it difficult to be understood if you get put to one of the foreign ones and that is the main reason why I am not giving 5 stars to tis review.
I missed a payment by one day and they charged me £12 then sent a text telling me I could not use my card. Loyal customer for years, no longer. Left yesterday. Also sick of Indian call centres where they have false american accents and call you Mr John Smith all the way through the call.Now with Natwest who were helpful and have UK call centres.
According to Barclaycard, I appear to have an 'unusual purchase pattern'. My card is frequently blocked. I've asked them (several times) to stop blocking it, but without result. I had no problems when the card was with MorganStanley. MorganStanley staff phoned occasionally and were very polite, phoning back later if they couldn't get hold of me at that moment. Barclaycard, on the other hand, don't appear to try so hard, blocking the card frequently, resulting in my waiting on the phone (not a free number) to speak to a gruff 'Fraud' department, with no apology for making me miss purchases, or having to charge to other cards. It's frustrating and I am unable to trust the card. I always travel with a back-up card now and frequently have to use it. The free phone number for Barclaycard (8am-8pm) is currently 0800 731 0200. Connection may drop, especially when 'transferring', but persistence pays off eventually. They have rarely called me back when they've said they would.
I used barclaycard when signing up for Carnival funpoints rewards card. They are HORRIBLE in customer service. They trap you with the reward. When you finally get someone in customer service to credit your statement, the next month they claim your bill is a DAY late, charge you late fees and interest. $100.00 rewards with over $50.00 in late fees and charges. I am never late. I send my C. C. bills off 7 working days early without fail and pay them off every month. I only use credit cards for rewards. These dogs had the audacity to tell me i am late and would NOT reverse the interest at all. We talked to (so called) supervisors and NO one would reverse the charges which proves them as thieves IMO. I will stick with Chase. They aren't a perfect credit card company, but barclaycard is a nightmare.
Eighteen years ago I had a Barclaycard and had no problems at all with it. I stopped using it and that is when the problems started. I would not recommend using a Barclaycard as it has been a nightmare!!
My experience -
As I mentioned 18yrs ago I had a card and although I was not a great one for paying my bills on time, I did always eventually pay and I am sure they loved me as they added late payment charges every month which I would pay. I paid the card off and stopped using it when I got together with my partner and didnt think anymore of it until about six months ago.
I still bank with Barclays and tried to get an overdraft with them, they refused it and when I asked why I was told it was because off an outstanding debt with my Barclaycard and I still owed £200. I told the that this was not possible as I hadnt used it for 18yrs - they said yes that was right the debt was from 18yrs ago. I argued with them that it had been paid and they asked me to prove it (like I keep paperwork and receipts for 18yrs!)
Anyway to cut a long story short, it has now been passed to a debt collector who tell me I owe £600 to Barclays plus their charges (where this extra £400 came from who knows). I have again been in touch with Barclays who tell me that yes it is £600 I owe from 18yrs ago.
As it stands today I have sent Barclays a letter stating that I want proof that I owe it (I used a really good template letter from a finance website that states that they have to prove to me that I owe it and if they do not provide this then by law I do not have to pay). I have recieved a letter back saying that it may take a while for them to retreive it in their archives.
I will let you know that happens !!!
I wouldn't recommend anyone getting a credit card but if you are going to, don't get this one.
I had my Barclaycard for 12 years and never had any problems at all. About 6 years ago I paid off all of my debts and didn't use the card for a couple of years. A couple of years ago I decided to use it again (I had three cards I could have chosen but as I had never had any issues with Barclaycard, I decided to use this one). Again, for about a year, I never had any problems with them. When I started using it again, I opted for paperless statements and as I always paid the same amount each month via direct debit, very rarely checked my account online. When I did however, I noticed that I had been charded PPI. Something I had not signed up for and had not paid in the past. When I went online to check back (you can only check statements back for 6 months) I had been charged this each month. I phoned them and had to speak to 7 different people before finally being hung up on. It took me over an hour of calling, being on hold and being passed from person to person (none of whom spoke decent English and none of whom knew what I was talking about) before I decided to complain online. This was very easy to do. I received a reply a few weeks later explaining that I had set up PPI when I first applied for the card (which I hadn't) but it had been cancelled in Dec 09 (which it hadn't as it was now Feb and still showing on my statements). Luckily, there was now a new number to call in ref. of my complaint so I phoned them. They had no idea where this information had come from and couldn't help me. To make matters worse, all of my online statements were now unavailable to view (and are still unavailable to date).
That is just one (ongoing) problem. Another huge problem I have recently encountered is payments. I have always paid on the same date (or the last working day of the month) via Direct Debit. I had a statement telling me I was overdue and had been charged a £12 late payment fee. I had already paid that month but was informed that statements are issued every 25 days so sometimes 2 payments will need to be made in one month. I'm not sure about everyone else but I only get paid once a month and have never encountered this with them or any other company in the past. Again, I called and was on hold for ages, then passed from person to person until I asked to speak to a supervisor. I had to ask 3 times before this was allowed. When he came on the phone he explained to me that this has always been the case (it hadn't as my statement was always generated on the same date and my payment was always made on the same date) and then accused me of lying by stating that my payments were not always being made on the last working day of the month. He was very rude, unhelpful and didn't get his facts right when looking at my payment history. Again, I was forced to complain online, this time being refunded the £12 late payment fee but also being told that the info I was given was correct and payments may sometimes occur twice in one month. I was also told it would take 2 months to change a payment date meaning the next 2 payments would also be late and that those charges would not be waivered.
Barclaycard are only interested in making money from late payment fees and they will sting you whenever they can. The call centre is in India and the staff (if you actually manage to get through are unhelpful, rude, difficult to understand and have great difficulty understanding you. I wont be doing business with them in the future.
Hi,I HAD A GOLDFISH CARD AND WHEN THEY WERE TAKEN OVER BY BARCLAYCARD EVERYTHING WENT WELL FOR THE FIRST YEAR. AFTER HOLIDAYING IN NEW ZEALAND I RETURNED TO FIND MY CARD DETAILS HAD BEEN COMPROMISED.THUS BEGAN THE FARCE,BARCLAYCARD HAVE OUTSOURCED THEIR COMPLETE PROCESSING/CALL CENTRE TO INDIA AND TOOK ME 4 MONTHS OF CONSTANT PHONE CALLS EACH TIME HAVING TO EXPLAIN MY DISPUTE TO ANOTHER NEW VOICE ON THE LINE.I WOULD NEVER RECOMEND ANY ONE TO TAKE ON ONE OF THESE CARDS. TAKE ONE AT YOUR PERIL
When the Goldfish Credit Card first became available many years ago I decided that it was time to get my first credit card. There was no annual charge and they would give me points on my purchases which could be redeemed for vouchers or, in those days, used to pay off my gas or electricity bills.
I didn't need to worry about the interest rate as I always pay off my credit card in full every month so I had a credit card that was effectively paying me to use it.
I got one point for each pound spent and 1,000 points got me a £10 voucher although over the years this had changed a few times until the rate was 1,750 points for a £10 voucher, but it still was free to me.
A couple of years ago Goldfish was bought out by Barclaycard and I was reissued with a new card although pretty much everything else stayed the same.
I have been as impressed with Barclaycard as I was with Goldfish. I still pay my bill in full every month and I leave the points to build up until I want to buy something from such as Argos and then I redeem my points for vouchers and thus reduce the cost of my purchase. There is a wide range of vouchers to choose from including leisure and shopping with a huge variety of stores, they also have monthly offers where you may get bonus vouchers with redemptions at certain stores. I seem to remember that we got free Easter Eggs from Woolworth's one year!
I have just taken a look at the Barclaycard website to find the current APR which is 15.9%. I have no idea whether this is good or bad as it is something I don't need to know but I do know that borrowing on my credit card would not be a good idea! LOL!
The account works in the same way as any other credit card in that interest on the full amount outstanding will begin to accrue from the date the payment is due if you do not pay the amount off in full. Interest on any cash withdrawals will accrue from the date of the withdrawal.
Barclaycard are also offering 0% interest on balance transfers for 15 months from the opening of an account although there is a handling fee of 2.9% on these.
The website is easy to use and gives comprehensive information about transactions on my Barclaycard so that I can keep track of the spending and make sure that there is nothing amiss. It is easy to pay my bill online and access the monthly statements.

It began one morning with a telephone call which was an automated message and I must confess that I assumed it to be a scam and put the phone down so I can't actually tell you what information I would have been given here. Ooops!
I went into town later that day and during my shopping attempted to use my Barclaycard which was refused. At this point I just assumed it was a blip in the system and didn't really think any more about it until I returned home.
I then tried to log into my Barclaycard account just to make sure that all was well and I got any error message asking me to ring the office straight away which I did.
I was told that my card had been stopped as there had been some unusual activity including two transactions for Western Union amounting to over £600! I have never used Western Union in my life! There was also a transaction for Interflora for £198 - I would like to have seen THAT bouquet!
After agreeing that the transactions were indeed fraudulent the gentleman at Barclaycard explained what was going to happen. The cards on my account would be cancelled and I was told to destroy my card and to tell my husband, who is the additional cardholder to destroy his card too - pretty obvious stuff I know but my mind was racing at this point wondering who had my details and how they had got them so I did appreciate being reminded of the obvious.
I was told that new cards would be with me within five working days and that some forms would be emailed to me regarding the fraudulent transactions. The gentleman at Barclaycard was helpful and courteous and answered all my questions however daft (remember I was a bit worked up at this point!) patiently and without making me feel like an idiot. He also assured me that all my details would be transferred to my new card so that I wouldn't lose any information.
The forms arrived by e mail within minutes and I just have to list the fraudulent transactions, of which there are only the two Western Union ones as they have already removed the Interflora one for me. The information on the forms also assures me that any costs incurred due to the fraudulent transactions would be refunded to me. I then have to sign the forms and return them to Barclaycard by post.
My information reappeared on the website within hours of my card being officially cancelled and the new one issued so I am back online and can monitor my transactions. I could then see that my card was the one that had been used as opposed to my husband's and it had been used from Austria! The mind boggles!
The new credit cards arrived two days after the phone call so I was very impressed with that too. I just had to ring to verify safe receipt of my card and I was also given details of an insurance that I could take out against identity fraud which is something that I am currently considering.
I only have praise for the way that my problem was dealt with from the initial notification to the resolution. I check my card balance online every day as I do with my bank account to make sure that nothing untoward is happening but Barclaycard were so quick off the mark that they beat me to it!
The only thing that remains a mystery is who did this and how they got my details and I guess that's something I will never know. It does make me feel a bit creepy though..............
This is a review of my Barclaycard credit card that I have had for 13 years now. My first credit card: picture me, a first year student, a bit green, skint and being told I could have a whole £500 limit!!!
**Kept the card***
Roll on to 2010 and I've paid off all my student debts but still have the card. Admittedly it's not on the best APR at 9.9% (cash rate is an alarming 27.9%) but I mainly use it for online purchases and gambling websites (yes I do like a bet on the horses!) and I settle the balance now each month.
**A loyal customer**
Why have I stayed with them for this long? Well to be honest I have other credit cards like cash back ones that I use for petrol and shopping but I have found the customer service at Barclaycard to be excellent when I have needed to use them.
**Excellent when things went wrong for me**
In 2008 I bought something online for my wedding (a sad trackie top that had my married name on the back of it) I planned to whip it out and wear it home from the airport after we got married in Mexico. Sadly the US website I ordered it from took the money but never delivered the goods. So I never got my top but Barclaycard were excellent in reversing the transaction after I proved my attempted communications with the company to chase my top. Barclaycard made me then destroy my card and order a replacement one all in the name of security! I'm quite glad now I didn't get it as I can't imagine wearing the top now I've been married a couple of years.
Shortly after finishing Uni and earning a full time wage I wanted to buy a PC so I rang Barclays and asked them to raise the credit limit. They refused me this credit (I've no idea why, I only wanted £1000!) so I had to take out another credit card to make this purchase. That was a bit annoying.
***A little more credit**
Shortly after my failed credit application they put the limit up anyway but by then it was too late and I had bought the computer. So I have a slightly higher credit limit now but don't really need to use it but I suppose it's handy to have just in case. In the words of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman: "Big mistake" Barclaycard. You'd have probably made a bit out of me in interest for a year or so but that's just not my style now!
**No comments about online banking***
I don't do online banking with this card as I don't tend to have much going on it so just wait for my paper statements and pay the balance.
**Good monthly statement**
Their statements are really easy to understand, outlining a summary of your balance, minimum payments and a recommendation to pay more than the minimum payment, and then there's a box about the APR your card is on and credit limits.
The back of the statement has clear information about bank charges which are £12 each for late payment, going over your credit limit and returned payments but if you stay within your credit limit and ensure payments are sent / received on time you can avoid these charges. I have never had to pay one thankfully.
Well, this isn't my primary credit card and I don't think I spent enough on it to get the incentive when I first got it so I didn't get my £30 M&S vouchers or whatever the deal was all those years ago. I suppose I'm not really the type of customer they really want, just putting the odd online purchase on it and paying off the bill monthly. I really appreciated how well they dealt with the company that ripped me off and apart from the issue over credit limits that happened nearly 10 years ago, I have never had any problems with Barclaycard.
I've had my barclay card for a few years now and they have always been good to me.
I had a few issues with PPI and missed payment charges which I disputed and to give Barclay card their due, they were very very professional and very good with me.
I find that you only find out a company's true ''customer service'' when an issue like this arises.
I like a company that takes ownership of complaints and personally deal with your issue . Barclay card did exactly this and hence my issue was resolved within two weeks which I was very pleased with!
I think they do have over seas calls centres when making payments over the phone, but again their staff selection process must be very good as i have never encountered a language barrier issue. I have always been pleased with the level of service I have received, and that is what is important when it comes to dealing with my money.

level of english spoken by over seas advisors = great
complaints handling = very impressive
