Advantages: Cashback .. always good
Disadvantages: Not keeping their promise, in my case at least
Barclaycard has been offering a broad range of credit cards to suit different needs and credit profiles.
I came to apply to the card when I first found out about its cashback card two months ago. Back then it was offering 1% for supermarket and petrol purchases while 0.5% cashback for other purchases. Though this was not the best cashback deal around back then (American Express cashback card was offering 4%) I had to apply to this after being turned down by AMEX.
Amazingly, despite being turned down by AMEX just a short while before, I still got my application approved by Barclaycard.
When I first got the card, I registered it online and tried to find out about the cashback details on my account page. Surprisingly they do not provide this information on anywhere of the account webpage after you have logged in. Thus I called up and asked about the exact rate that I am entitled to. I was then told that it is 1% on supermarket/petrol and 0.5% on other purchases, which is as expected.
However, later when I received my first statement, I was shocked to find out that I was only given 0.5% on supermarket/petrol purchases instead of 1% as promised. Hence i called up the customer service. This time, they just simply apologized and said that it should be 0.5% and that fact the statement is correct. My request so that they refer to their recordings on my first call had fallen onto deaf ears. Even after I wrote a complaint urging them to reinstate my rate, I only receive an email saying that the 0.5% is 'confirmed' to be correct in return.
Well, I supposed maybe it is caused by the fact that my credit report was dented after the rejection I got from AMEX. Anyway, to be fair overall Barclaycard is still a fairly good card. It is a platinum card with low APR as well and if you apply today, they are offering 4% cashback on supermarket/petrol! At least that is what it says on the application website. Yet, Don't be surprise if you get a lower rate later.
Happy shopping ;)
