Advantages: Saves money, gets you a free magazine every month and rewards you for recycling

Disadvantages: You can't use points as part of a payment

I didn't choose to have a Boots Advantage card. It was forced upon me by a shop assistant who didn't give me a chance to say no. I wasn't sure what the advantage card was for at first and I didn't want to end up with a store card that would cost me money like in some shops. Luckily, it wasn't like that at all. It's just a loyalty card, and apparently the most generous loyalty card in the UK. You simply swipe your card when paying in store and collect 4 points for every pound you spend. 4 points is worth 4p. Doesn't sound a lot, but it all adds up.

You can pick up a temporary advantage card from a Boots store, which you can use when you have applied for an advantage card and you are waiting for it to be delivered. Any points you collect on the temporary card are automatically transferred on to the proper card. You can apply for your card online or with an application form, which you can pick up in store.

Advantage card holders can get Boots' Health & Beauty magazine for free (it costs £1 without one) and you also have the option of recycling inkjet cartridges and mobile phones in exchange for points. You can sometimes find free post envelopes inside Health & Beauty magazines, or you can pick them up in store. You will receive 100 points per ink cartridge and more for mobile phones.

Once you've saved up enough points, you can use them to buy products in Boots stores. Unfortunately, you can't use points towards an item and pay the rest in cash. You have to pay the full price with points.

Boots Advantage card is a very generous loyalty card, which also comes with other benefits. Would recommend to anyone who shops in Boots a lot.

Summary: A big advantage!
