It feels a bit odd reviewing a credit card, as they are so often viewed as an evil, perhaps a necessary evil, but an evil nonetheless. So my theory when looking into getting one of these evil things was to get one that at least was going to give me something back! The best thing about the Capital One World Mastercard is that it offers cashback on purchases. There was an introductory rate of 4% for all purchases during the first three months and then 1% for everything after those initial months.
Thankfully I have been lucky as I am usually able to pay off my credit cards in full every month. When I got engaged, I knew that I was going to be forking out a lot of money for things and figured I may as well try to get as much back as possible, so when I saw the cashback (thanks Martin Lewis!) offer I applied for this card.
It was then when the only difficulty and the reason why it doesn't get 5 stars happened. For some reason my application was turned down. This was very strange, as like I said, I always paid off my credit card in full every month and had a Visa and an American Express already. i could not understand why I was refused. So I decided t oappeal the decision not to let me have a card.
Then it got really weird. I started getting letters with two different references on them, but both basically rtelling me that I was not gettting a card. Then oddly out of the blue a card arrived (under one of the references). So evidently something had changed their mind!
Besides the strange application procedure, I think this is a good credit card. The cashback was great and well received. I signed up for online banking with the card and the website is very easy to use and understand and you can even pay off your bill online once you have added in your debit card details. I usually pay by cheque, but have also paid over the phone and online before. You can also pay your bill in the Post Office and by setting up a direct debit.
Now obviously as this is a cashback card, the interest rate is pretty punitive, so my advice would be to pay this off in full every month. If you are planning on not doing this, get a different card with a better rate. This is another reason why it is not a five star card!
I think that Captial One are reliable and recognised and I am happy with this card.
Summary: Pay it off in full and you will do well out of it!
