Advantages: None so far as I can tell.

Disadvantages: Appalling service and no proper complaints procedure.

Everyday I got four or more phone calls from stroppy members of Capital One's customer services wanting to speak to someone who wasn't me (a certain Mr Higgins, whoever he may be).
Whenever I tried to explain that I was not the person they were looking for, they said they could not alter their records, without Mr Higgins' account number, which of course I didn't have. They then went on to add that I must be MR. Higgins since I had his phone number. This is of course not true. I had had that number nearly a year already, and there was no doubt it was mine.
I have never banked with Capital One and I don't even have a credit card.
I was then threatened by them with legal action and called as many as seven times a day, weekends and evenings included, for a whole month.
I tried to call them back but they would not transfer me to a complaints department or a (non-)customer services department since they apparently don't have a phone number(!).
In desperation I had to change my phone number (with all the cost and hassle that entails). I was even advised by my phone company to start criminal proceedings against Capital One, but I thought it better not to bring further attention to myself for fear of reprisals.
I can't imagine what it feels like to bank with them when they are so obnoxious to people who are not even their customers.

Summary: If your name is Mr Higgins, then you owe me an explanation.

Contacting the right people is the answer. I've found the India-based Call Centre to be useless. I guess they have a script they work to, and it's impossible to get them to bother sorting anything that's not in their script. However, the good news is that their UK staff -- on 0115 8433792 -- are very helpful and should quickly resolve your problem. Failing that, make a call to the Financial Ombudsman Service and/or the telecommunications regulator. But, try the 0115 8433792 number first. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!

There are a number of people you could approach for help on this including the banking and telecommunications ombudsmen. It's probably something that needs to be dealt with in a calm manner.
