Advantages: Cashback, easy to read statements.
Disadvantages: Contact you whenever unusual items appear on your card.
Capital One is a company I have never had any real problems with, just niggles.
The application I made was very simple and mostly done online. I was told at the time that the card would take a long time to arrive since there had been a lot of demand for the card I was applying for.
Perhaps it was because it offered a 0.5% cashback, an early player in the cashback game.
The card did take a while to arrive, however everything was correct and easy to activate.
I applied for a Capital One Circle card which no longer exists. My latest card they sent me is called the 'Platinum' card but my terms remain the same as the Circle card I applied for.
Every purchase you make, they do pay a cashback of 0.5% (on selected cards only) and although I have had some of these, they do put it onto your statement and it is only once per year. Some companies pay cashback every month. It is nice to get the lump some rather than a pound every month, however.
Another niggle I have had is their constant phone calls to authorise transactions. Buy from someone a bit different to the norm and they are likely to contact you if it is an customer not present transaction to confirm. This is good for security in one way, however it might be more convenient if you could confirm you placed the order on their website.
The website is fairly simple to use and has just undergone a facelift. It isn't the best designed site in the world, but you can find out all the information you generally need.
I always pay the card off in time, however there is a section of the bottom of the statements that show how much estimated interest you would pay (if you made the minimum payment) and the cashback amount you are to be rewarded with. This is useful as you might see you can use your earned cashback to cover some interest if a big bill has appeared, such as a house repair.
These are also a company I have never had to deal with over the phone very much, only when they ring you when a new company appears on your card.
Not a bad card, but then I have always paid off in full every month and I get the cashback rewards too.
Summary: I would recommend this card if you pay off in full each month. If not, there are better cards.

- 30/08/08 I'd be interested to know credit rates, plus rates for cash withdrawals etc. |
