Advantages: 0% rate
Disadvantages: the incompetent staff
Capital One was offering a 0% credit card, and after my sister pointed out to us that we were paying a lot of money in interest each month, we decided to apply for their credit card and save some money. I think these 0% credit cards are a brilliant idea, just so long as you repay the original debt on them, and not be tempted to actually use them for spending on as that's usually very expensive and probably the main reason that they offer you such a great deal.
We applied for the card online and it was easy and quick to fill in the online form. We gave details of the amount we wanted transferred to my Barclaycard and were given an immediate decision. So far, so good!
The card arrived in about ten days, followed by the pin number. At this point I was very impressed with their service. Until...
I got my Barclaycard statement through, and realised that the amount I had transferred to Capital One wasn't enough to cover the debt on Barclaycard. We had to phone up and activate the Capital One credit card, so while on the phone we explained that we had just got our Barclaycard statement in and that we hadn't transferred quite enough to cover it and could we transfer a bit more . The man was helpful and agreed and said it was all done.
A week later, we received a letter stating that we were being charged £12 for going over the agreed limit! I was amazed, we'd never, ever gone over any agreed limit on anything before, and I knew for certain we hadn't on this because we had only spoken to someone the week previous. We phoned them up and found they had added BOTH the amounts onto the card, so now we were £1000 in credit with Barclaycard, and £200 over the agreed limit with Capital One!
They agreed it was their fault but said they couldn't just take the money back from Barclaycard unless we filled in paperwork for it, which they promised to send to us. A week after, we received another letter - with yet another£12 charge for being over the limit! We phoned again, were on the phone more than an hour, they couldn't help, so they transferred us to a manager then.. we were cut off before the manager answered, and had to start again! Eventually we were answered and they agreed to take the charges off and send out the forms again, but ...... yes, we got ANOTHER letter and ANOTHER £12 charge!!
I telephoned Barclaycard and got it transferred back to Capital One, even though Capital One said that couldn't be done. But Barclaycard were way more helpful and actually understood what had happened and just transferred it back.
After receiving yet another letter and another charge we phoned up and stayed on the phone, speaking to two different managers until they took all the charges off and they gave us a £ 30 credit for all the inconvenience caused!
Aside from all the trouble, we now get statements every month and everything is fine (touchwood!!) no more letters!
But it was very stressful and we were worried that our credit rating might be harmed.
Verdict- not really worth all the hassle!
Their staff don't really have a clue what they are talking about and each member of staff tells you something different. They also have a very non-caring attitude and their customer service is zero.
Summary: I would avoid this company, there are plenty more 0% credit cards

- 25/01/09 Credit card companies are not supposed to charge more than one over the limit fee in any one monthly period. Your story is alarming on many levels. |
