Advantages: Some Good Perks, It's Gold!

Disadvantages: High APR, Only receive details of promos if your good enough

The Debenhams Gold card. Yes please, my soon to be husband and I said when offered this shiny piece of plastic way back in 1997. The perks seemed great, and in thos days, they were! Now in the more sober noughties (or whatever fatuous title the pundits have come up with for the decade in which we live) the perks are not that great, particularly if you're like me. Come for a journey into my life with Debenhams....

Back in 1997, my local Debenhams, Norwich had set up some ace discounts with local restaurants, parking offers, and had good promotions. I was always very impressed that I could get any garment altered fo free, not that I ever did. We spent loads, sometimes got stung with the exceedingly high interest rates (29.9% APR last time I looked) and thoroughly enjoyed the "hey we're Gold Card holders" feeling of going into the small and tired looking lounge.

Then came our children and the refit. We moved further away and stopped spending as much (and we paid of the bill before the interest charge). Recently, we've noticed that we are not receiving any details of promotions. Apparently, this is because we aren;t spending enough. Great marketing ploy guys!! Don't invite us to things, and we won't spend more! The very helpful young man at Customer Services says we have to ring GM who do the finance bit and ask to be put on their mailing list. Not so popular now, are we?!

Still, it's not all bad. There are two enormously useful perks - 20% off any meal in there restaurant when you pay on your card (great with a hungry toddler - they do good packed lunches, and you needn't carry cash. Secondly, if you use your card to pay for a Wedding Gift on one of their lists, it's gift wrapped and delivered free (saves approx £6)

Definitely not the best card ever - they'll only be your friend if you spend loads!

I think then you'll find that you've got postal problems in your new area! Quite a few blackspots that won't through a Royal Mail PAF File. Trust me - I've got some history of Debenhams marketing and they always give you at least 6-9 months, usually year of non-activity on your card before they figure you're not interested anymore. The 'you're not spending enough' line is a bit misleading.....

Thanks for your comment country - but the point is I hadn't stopped spending - just wasn't spending as much!!

To be fair to Debenhams though, they do keep sending you promotional material for up to A YEAR, after you stop spending. So like any decent company, if you show no signs of responding to marketing, they will not keep inundating you with it. You can't really expect companies to keep spending money on you if you don;t give anything back!
