Advantages: get 10% off for a week
Disadvantages: staff hate asking for accounts, staff are pressurised, only get 50p commission
I work in debenhams, and would like to share a few facts about the card. The store card isn't particularly bad if you are careful and remember to pay it off on time. you can now pay it off at any till point. this is especially good for new account holders as straight after you have opened your account, got the 10% off for the week you can clear it. also about 90% of customers who clear it off straight away never use it again, which of course means debenhams and GE Capital loose out on money. just a few things you might want to know from a staff's point of view. we have account targets, so each week each department and the store as a whole have to reach a certain target, sometimes as many as 40 accounts in a week for the buisiest departments. we also get ALOT of pressure from our line managers, verging on bulling to reach these targets. of course they in turn are getting bullied by their bosses who are under pressure from whoever is on top. But still, this pressure isn't any excuse for the nastyness some of the managers ooze. the person that opens the account gets 50p commission, which is NOTHING considering the amount of profits the companies get from account holders. We get £1 if we get account cover. this commission has decline over the years, and you can see that with inflation, we get pittance for more work. we now also have to process the account on the computer, whereas before we phone up and the person in the call centre actually processed the account. in my opinion we are getting paid one persons wage for doing two peoples jobs. so appologies to any customers if you are fed up of being pressured at the till! we have to do it or we get a massive telling off. to reasure you the staff will never scam you or anything like that, and i always make sure people are aware of the interest rate and the fact i can clear their account straight away. so take pity on us n
ext time your in!

Maiakins - 11.09.03 Fascinating insight. I had suspected that Debenhams (and House of Fraser too) must put a lot of pressure on their staff to flog the loyalty cards. I remember asking a really snappy woman at House of Fraser why she was so incredibly grumpy, and she quite honestly said, sorry but I can't stand having to always ask people if they want the loyalty card and I'm fed up of the pressure I'm under to do so. |
