EGG.......well what can i say......
My partner has had an "Egg" card for a couple of years now..that is until they began helping themselves to the contents of his bank account whenever they felt like it.

Things were fine until about a year ago when we decided to up the payments over the net.

Thinking everything was fine we did not use the card at all, continuing to pay every month on the agreed date..then suddenly things changed.

After telling them that our phone number had changed we assumed everything was alright until they rang my partners old number, discussing details on the phone with a complete stranger. We did not hear a thing until we received a shock form the bank when a statement arrived and we were excessivly overdrawn, upon checking the statement found that Egg had takenout three months payments in one go, causing our overdraft to turn a sickly shade of egg yellow. Thinking that it was our fault we contacted egg who said that they had had no payments fromt the bank during the past three months and despite our having had no notification of this, they had decided for themselves that they were going to keep trying to take out the money at numerous intervals without consulting us at all.

when asked why they had not contacted us they did not have an answer... the bank were very unhappy, but were adamant they were not in the wrong for allowing them to do this....

egg left us without money and an overdraft the size of a battery farm.

To add to this we informed them that we would now like to pay off the card completely and would do so on a specific date, so what did they do.....TOOK OUT MORE PAYMENTS....EVEN AFTER TELEPHONING THEM ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS TO CHECK THAT THEY HAD CANCELLED THE DEBIT.

we had agreed on a date for them to take out the money, well that day came and went, so we checked with the bank that the money had gone out and were told that they had debited it a week previo
usly......when we spoke to egg the man who we had agreed this with , had apparantly been on holiday in the week the money was due to go out and had decided to debit it before he went...........

as far as we are concerned egg are a law unto themselves they do as they please......LET THIS BE A WARNING TO ALL OF YOU OUT THERE...........ALSO CHECK OUT YOUR PAYMENT PROTECTION CHARGES DO YOU KNOW THEY ARE CHARGING YOU AT LEAST THIRTY POUNDS PER MONTH FOR THIS.........WE KNOW THEY WERE CHARGING US THIS EVERY MONTH AND WE FAILED TO NOTICE.

ON ANOTHER NOTE, THEYRE NO BETTER TO WORK FOR EITHER, AS MY PARTNER KNOWS ONLY TOO WELL, AS HE WORKED FOR THEM FOR A WHILE.....
WHILST WORKING THERE I HAD A PROBLEM DURING MY PREGNANCY AND AS I WAS WORKING IN MANCHESTER, HE WANTED TO COME TO SEE ME, HE ASKED FOR PERMISSION TO LEAVE ONE, YES ONE HOUR EARLY AND THEY SAID NO........THATS HOW MUCH THEY CARE FOR THEIR WORKERS JUST WHAT DO THEY THINK OF THEIR CUSTOMERS.........

This reflects very much my own experience with them. They utterly messed up with us and caused us sleepless nights. They simply could not care less. 2 years on, I still have cold shivers at the financial situation they reduced us to - it was a nightmare.

I believe the payment protection charges are in relation to the amount of money owed on the account. Consequently, if you had a large outstanding balance for any length of time which you later cleared in one hit, it would have seemed like a considerable overhead.
