Advantages: Pretty Design, Good Customer Service, Higher-than-usual limits
Disadvantages: Potentially easy to get into serious debt, At the end of the day, you are still borrowing money - so if you don't pay, they probably get as nasty as the rest of the card issuers
The only real problem I have with my egg card is the amount of credit I have! To be precise, 1000% of the limit of my existing card. I've found them to be really helpful, and the rates excellent even if I have only had the willpower to pay it off in full a few times. It's probably my lack of self control, but the statements do occasionally seem to spiral and the ease with which purchases are made can be frightening. Example: in November I fancied a new laptop. On my lunch-break I went into PC World - five minutes later I was three grand poorer. Otherwise, the decision to issue a card was instant, it arrived quickly after a paper agreement was signed and their phone helpdesk couldn't have been more helpful if they tried. The cash back feature is pretty nifty, even if plenty of lenders offer it these days. I can't say that it attracted me to the card though... it just looked prettier than the others on offer. I've taken it abroad a few times, but be aware that the chip doesn't work on the continent (and I got caught out in the only country I went to last year where I didn't speak the lingo, so it was a bit tricky). The only other thing is, like all cards, the exchange rate isn't too competitive - the best thing to do is to take cash/travellers checks and carry the card just in case. I work as a web designer, so I'm not bothered by internet-only statements but this could be a disadvantage if you don't have access or have a bad connection. If they want to increase customer satisfaction, perhaps they should consider paying off account balances at random :). There is no comparison with my (soon-to-be-defunct) Barclaycard.

- 30/05/03 They were a good card when they paid a full 1% cashback, I boycotted them when they dropped the rate to half percent. |
