Advantages: Low intro rate, Reward Scheme
Disadvantages: Better Incentives Elsewhere
OK pet lovers - you might take your dog out for walks in the country, it might guard your house, play with your children and be your best friend but when it comes to shopping what can it really do ? So your dog can carry the newspaper home, but does it pay for it, pay for the groceries and buy you that new suit you were looking at in the sales ? No ? (Neither does mine - so don't worry !!) But, in my wallet I carry around a Goldfish - I know I should keep it in a tank so please don't tell the RSPCA, but a tank doesn't fit in my back pocket and I don't want a wet bum either !! Actually, this Goldfish is a little plastic card with some nice pictures of fish on it - and when I go shopping with it, it brings a smile to my face as I use it to pay for my purchases. My Goldfish is a credit card - from British Gas and HFC Bank - like many other credit cards it has a good low intro rate and a rewards scheme - so really there's nothing unusual about it. It's accepted as any other credit card is - home and abroad, let's you buy now and pay later and allows you to withdraw cash. The incentive scheme is OK - I reckon it works out at around 0.8% or so - special offers can improve it from time to time, but you could do better elsewhere. (Egg pays 1%). The internet application form is quick and easy and my initial credit limit was in my opinion very fair. Overall, the major benefit for me was the low intro rate as I pocketed my limit and put it in the bank at a few percentage points more, then paid it off when the intro rate finished. It's also nice to get something in return for using the card - so that's another plus point, but overall - despite it being more use than a dog when it comes to shopping I think there are better cards out there.
