Advantages: Great Website
Disadvantages: Need to spend £6000 to get an item worth £20!
I have had a nectar card for a while not and in that time I've racked up nearly 7500 points which, technically, is the equivalent of me spending £7500 pounds. Obviously I haven't spent that much due to 2 points per £1 promotion. 7500 points, brilliant I thought. Any excitement soon disappeared when I saw what I could get. Only looking at the top end of the points (6000 - 7500) I have picked the following as the "pick of the bunch"
BT 1100 Cordless Phone - 6,800 points
Logic 3 Universal Dock - 6,200 points
Philips Ladyshave HP6335 - 6,200 points
Each of these can be bought separately for between £15 - £30 so why go out and spend £6,000 worth of points??
Other than the lack of points, there are some good elements to the Nectar Card.
Firstly, while it may be pretty useless on the high street, online there are numerous websites that will give you nectar points and lots that will do 2 points for every £1 spent. These can easily be accessed by logging into your account and selecting EStores and clicking through the specific site link. As far as I can see it pretty much has all the major retailers included. I only happened to find this out by chance and I think a little advertising would have helped their cause.
The website itself is very good. By logging in you can see a current points total and, if required, a more detailed points statement which shows exactly where you have collected your points and how many you have got. The website also lets you search through the available rewards (I use the term loosely) and if you want to then you can redeem them online. You can even select a treat which you want to save up for and it will tell you how far along you are with it.
You can also get bonus points. They will often give you 100 points for filling out a quick survey and have a lucky dip to give someone a million points. You will also get bonus points in the statements that you get with your card and this will help greatly in getting a decent amount of points.
Overall, I think there are many positive things about nectar but the one disappointment is the most important part; the rewards. I think if they maybe halved the amount of required points for each reward they may have more luck but as far as I'm concerned, its not really worth it
Summary: Stick to one of the cashback websites
