Advantages: Free to join, Can earn rewards on normal shopping
Disadvantages: Takes a lot of points for a good reward and points are slow to get
I am a big fan of loyalty cards, if you can get something back on your spends and its a free scheme I just can't see the point in not joining.
I have had my Nectar card for several years now when the Sainsbury's reward card swapped over to the Nectar scheme.
The first thing you should know about the Nectar card is that its a loyalty card scheme that can be used in various shops offline and online.
You can currently collect points at Homebase, BP Petrol Stations, Dolland and Aitchinsons and Sainsbury's when your out and about.
You can also collect online from over 100 stores including Amazon, Currys, Dorothy Perkins, Game and Interflora by going via the Nectar website to the shop the same way you may currently use a cashback site to earn money currently.
Depending on the store your Nectar points will vary similar again to cashback sites.
Your account can be maintained online at www.nectar.com.
You can update your personal details and check your balance as well as seeing how you can earn extra points by clicking on the My Bonus points section where you opt into offers relevant for you so once you take up the offer the points are automatically added onto your account or you can print coupons to take into retailers for the bonus points.
The scheme also has a large reward choice from money off shopping, holidays and transport to theatre trips, books and magazine subscriptions to even donating to charity or increasing your child trust fund, there is something for everyone to enjoy with the Nectar scheme.
Now onto the negative points.
The scheme isn't the best around, for example you need 500 points to get £2.50 off in Sainburys but you only get 2 points for each pound spent so thats £250 you need to spend to get £2.50 off.
You will probably also earn more shopping online via quidco or topcashback than using nectar e-stores but it does have Amazon which cashbacksites do not.
Its a nice card to keep in your wallet but don't expect big rewards unless you save your points up for a long time.
Summary: One for the wallet anyway.
