The Paypal "pre-paid" Visa card is one of the better prepaid cards on the market, especially if you receive money by Paypal, for example by selling on eBay.

The card itself costs £4.95 and the application process is straightforward. My card came quickly but it does look a little like a toy card. The name and card number are not embossed and the embedded chip looks like it was printed on. However, and despite my doubts, it has proved rugged enough for everday use.

The chief advantages of this card are that funds transferred to it from Paypal are generally available to spend in 24 hours as opposed to around 4 working days if one transfers the Paypal balance to a bank account.

Unlike many other prepaid cards, there are no fees for purchases in the UK and no monthly fees either. There are fees for withdrawing from cash machines and a currency charge for use overseas but these are common to just about all prepaid cards (and credit cards for that matter) and are at the more reasonable end of the spectrum.

This a good-value card prepaid which can be operated online - handy for those who can't easily pop out to a post office to top up.
