Advantages: convenience, can shop online too
Disadvantages: only in the UK
Using a debit card like Switch is extremely useful and convenient. First of all, it rules out the neccesity of having to bring a lot of cash with you at a time. It also acts as an alternative to paying by cheque. Having used this service through out the whole of my student years, I believe that it is a great alternative to using credit cards. I never did have a lot of problems with money matters and whilst studying I chose not to apply for credit cards unlike many of my friends. The reason being that I had seen many of them falling into the trap of using up their credit limits and ending up distraught when it came to paying. Actually, I did believe that I could control my spendings wisely but I didn't really want to take the chance. Being an avid shopper myself I knew that it was all too easy to spend a lot when you have the freedom, as in using credit cards. Therefore, I chose to and still remain loyal to my switch card. Using switch, it is comforting to know that what you spend will be automatically deducted from you account within 3 days at the most. You are therefore always in control of the amount you spend as you can check and update your balance easily. And if you do not have an overdraft facility then the transaction will simply be unauthorised (embarassing but better than being in debt). Switch is so convenient in many ways especially in this day and age where online shopping has become so popular. I was pleased to see that the main online stores such as amazon, tescos, etc. all also accept Switch along with the usual credit cards. This make shopping online more convenient since in the usual case, if you do not have a credit card, you will have to pay by cheque. And paying by cheque for online goods takes ages to process. Now if you are shopping in the old fashioned way, you will be pleased to know that Switch is the leading debit card in the UK and is accepted in most stores. Even small corner lot conven
ience stores accept them. You can also pay by Switch at travel agents, the rail and coach stations, cinemas and so on. When paying by switch, you can also have the choice of getting cashback. Switch and other debit cards, are especially useful for young adult who are entering into university or college, who might not really be in control of their finances yet. It gives them the feel of using plastic as a means of payment, yet they do not have to be burden with the possibility of overspending. Once they feel more comfortable then, they can graduate to using credit cards. The only minus that I can think of is that Switch can not be used in other foreign countries unlike the credit cards which are internationally accepted. So there, thank you to the wonderful creators of the debit card for making life a little bit easier on us.

- 01/05/03 I couldn't agree more, except I believe you can use Switch abroad if it has the "Maestro" symbol on the back (It's like the Mastercard symbol but blue and red). This is widely accepted in most European countries, and almost all European ATMs. |
