Advantages: If you pay off the balance every month - you get these points for no extra cost
Disadvantages: There could be better deals - always a risk
About 18 months ago I was looking to change my credit card to one which offers cash back as a way of getting a little bit extra. After looking at several different cards I decided on the Tesco Clubcard Credit Card. Where I live the only supermarket in town is Tesco and the closest petrol station is at the Tesco supermarket. This means that I do all of my grocery shopping and get my fuel from Tesco's.
The Tesco Clubcard Credit Card does not offer cashback but awards Tesco Clubcard Points; you get 5 points for every £4 spent with Tesco, in addition to your points for your purchase and 1 point for every £4 none Tesco Purchase. The credit card is a mastercard and comes in 2 design choices, a predominantly silver card or a blue card, I choose the silver card so not to get this mixed up with my clubcard. I decided to get this card to get extra points, I save my points and use them to buy the food for my daughters birthday parties and any left go towards treats for Christmas. Alternatively you can use these for Clubcard rewards where they are worth 4 times their value.
You only need to give your credit card when purchasing items at Tesco, you do not have to give your clubcard.
For online purchase there is a security function for authorising transactions, when you first use your credit card online you are asked to register and you set a password and answer some security questions. When you make online purchases you are asked to give 3 random letters from your password to proceed with the payment.
The statements are monthly usually dated around the 22nd and arrive by the 27th and the payment is due around the 11th of the following month. I only use my credit card for items I have budgeted for so I always pay the full amount each month. The typical APR is 16.9%, 0% interest on all purchases for 12 months from opening the account and 0% interest on balance transfers from account opening is currently being offered, however please check this before you apply as it may have changed.
The extra Tesco points I have received from the card is definitely noticeable when the vouchers come each quarter, so if you shop at Tesco and want to earn a few more points then I would recommend this card. If you do not use Tesco then a cash back card would probably suit you better. Its all about what you are trying to achieve with your credit card at the end of the day.
Summary: Decide what you want from your credit card - this one suited me.
