Advantages: Lots of free things!
Disadvantages: none
I started using Tesco's about 4 years ago when we moved into our current house and Tesco was the nearest supermarket. I immediately signed up to their clubcard and wow have I had some good stuff over the last four years.
I'll explain the basic concept firstly, just in case any of you have never come across Tesco and their empire! Basically, you sign up for a clubcard which is a loyalty scheme offered by them, so everytime you shop in one of their stores, online or in their petrol stations, you will be rewarded with 1 point for each pound you spend with them. This can then be redeemed for a reward once a quarter. Tesco will send you a statement, which explains where you have spent your money (points can also be collected from such things as Tesco Home Phone, Tesco Mobile, etc) and how much your rewards equal. The points you have collected can then be redeemed against the rewards on offer for 4 times the amount you have. For example, if you had £10 worth of clubcard vouchers, you can swap these for a reward which will be worth £40.
The rewards on offer include goldsmith vouchers, holidays, magazine subscriptions, restaurants, RAC breakdown cover and Open University vouchers. This is to name a few! You can also spend the vouchers in Tesco but you only get the face value to spend - not four times as you would with the rewards. They do currently have an offer on where you can double up your vouchers if you spend them in store, but this is not against your grocery shopping as you have to pick a specific department such as wine and champagne or toys. I think this is a con though, as why would you double them up when you can have 4 times the value with the rewards, although saying that I did redeem them against a crate of wine last quarter!!
In the last two years I have had £400 worth of Goldsmith vouchers which has bought myself a Hugo Boss watch and my husband a D & G watch; 2 x 12 free DVD rentals at Blockbusters; 6 x full years magazine subscriptions such as Mother & Baby; Top Gear, Gardeners World and OK; £80 worth of days out vouchers which I redeemed at Eureka Science Museum, The Deep in Hull and Magna in Sheffield; £40 worth of Cafe Rouge vouchers and a crate of wine!!! That's just in the last two years, I can't remember what we did with the first couple of years worth.
Why would you shop anywhere else?! My husband works for one of the other top supermarkets (I won't name which!), where we receive a 10% off discount card and we still continue to shop at Tesco due to the rewards they offer!
Tesco offer membership to clubs they run, such as the healthy living club, the wine club and baby & toddler club, all of which offer money off coupons and extra points coupons. These come straight to you door once every couple of months and are well worth joining.
Don't get me wrong, I do think Tesco are too much of a monopoly and I don't always agree with the way they do things, but if your going to shop you may as well be rewarded. Well worth signing up for if your not already a member.
Summary: Great way to get free stuff!
