Advantages: can receive some nice vouchers back
Disadvantages: you have to spend a lot to save a considerable amount
The Tesco Clubcard is a really good idea and can save you a lot of money, if you give Tesco a lot of money.
As I used to work at Tesco, I did a lot of shopping there, even before I received my 10% off priviledge card, which allowed me to rack up my points. In an average month I was spending around £400, which is 400 points, unless there is some kind of promotion on points.
The basic point of the card is spend money and receive points, which will then be sent to you in money off vouchers. You can either use your vouchers in store or exchange them for days out vouchers, restaurant vouchers etc. I have never exchanged mine for vouchers but some friends do and they say you get more back by doing this.
Every point is worth 1p. So to get yourself a decent amount in vouchers you would have to spend a lot of money in Tesco.
Your vouchers are sent to you quarterly and one month I received a voucher for £20. Meaning I has spent £2000 in Tesco in 3 months!!!!
Also, you receive some basic coupons with you statement, 25p off bread etc, which can be a little help.
However, when I ordered my card, it took 8 months to be sent to me! And I had plenty of people complaining to me about their card not coming through whilst on the checkouts. Tesco claim that it takes up to 3 months for your card to be sent, then you have to call the 0845 number to chase it up.
Overall, the Clubcard is a good little saver. I don't use mine that much now and probably get £3 every quarter, if that!! But if you spend a lot, you will receive a nice voucher back.
Summary: they're free so get one anyway, even if you don't use it you get some nice little vouchers.
