Advantages: Easy to get approved, Get your credit file back in shape

Disadvantages: VERY high APR, annual fee (that just went up!)

The Vanquis Bank credit card is the very first credit card I managed to get approval for because I do not have a great credit file (always moving address, not on the voter's roll). One day I got the application pack in the post, so I just filled it in and sent it off. A while later, I got the reply that I got approved, and had a credit limit for £250. My APR is 32.9%! And on top of that, I had to pay a annual fee of £19 that just went up today! I got a letter in the post saying that it will now be £25!

Customer service is fine, and I have always managed to get my point across clearly, and everything is done correctly.

The good thing is they include more than one GIRO payment form in your statement, so you can spread your payments over a few weeks.

I had used this card for just 2 months when my credit file had improved. In fact it had improved so much, that I managed to get an Amazon credit card with a reasonable 14.9% APR and 0% for 6 month, and a limit of £1700.

Although I will not normally recommend this card to others, I would do so to those who cannot get any credit cards at all. Just be careful of the high APR. If you include the fee (now £25), it works out to be over 60% for a balance of £250! Be very careful! Keep on top of your payment, and you are on your way to a better credit reference. Right now I have stopped using this card, and once my balance had been cleared, I will cut it in two and send it to them.

Summary: Get it if you must, but watch that APR!

If you can manage it responsibly it's sometimes the one of the only ways to repair it. But there are quite a few other things you can do as well, like registering on the electoral roll, checking your report and amending mistakes if there are any, etc ... There's a good guide on this on the aqua Card website, another one of these higher APR cards.

The problem with them is they are meant for people with poor credit, maybe already in debt. They could easily put these people into more debt. However if you have no credit history, this is good for building it up.

That is a very scary APR, but as long as you use if for what it seems to be intended, i.e. to get your credit rating back on course or indeed started, then it would seem worthwhile as long as you paid the balance back monthly and didn“t incur any charges
