A great buy when on offer for good quality & attractive plates

I bought these a little while ago to replace some older plates that were starting to look their age. I didn't want to use my 'extra special plates' because they seemed to delicate, so the Midnight Leaf set appealed as being practical, well-priced on offer and yet still pretty to look at.

This is a 12 piece dinner set from Argos that comprises of 4 dinner plates, 4 side plates and 4 bowls. They come packed in a cardboard box that's reasonably well insulated against being knocked and damaged. It was a tight squeeze to get them out but I managed without tearing the box down the side just in case I ended up needing to return them. I was a little skeptical of the quality before opening the box because of what I'd read in some of the reviews on the Argos site, so I wanted to check all was A-Okay before unpacking and throwing the box away.

The plates are porcelain and have a contemporary design on each of a basic leaf pattern. It's just a leaf, repeated around the outside rim of the plates and near the top of the bowls in contrasting colour. So, for instance, the plates are white with a wide black band around the edge and the leaves are white. I like this contrast because it stands out and looks modern yet chic, quite understated in a sense.

The measurements are of diameters are as follows: Dinner plate 27cm, side plate 19cm and bowl 14cm. I find the sizes to be very reasonable and useful for everyday place settings. The plates are large enough to spread your nom noms out and the rim, adding a bit of width and a slight 'lip' to plate, makes them practical for eating from. The side plates are a good size for toast and other 'side' type things, though they don't look as cute as the bowls. These are smaller than my last set but they're deep enough and easy to hold, so I've found them perfect for ice-cream and cereal etc (especially the former!).

The quality seems to be good for what was a £30 set that because of being on half price offer. I wouldn't pay the full price for them, but then again, I'd be hard pushed to pay that for any that I want as an everyday, practical set that I don't have to worry too much about when using / cleaning etc. So far, I've not noticed any defects in any of the plates or bowls and the porcelain seems to be sturdy enough that I don't consider them to be overly delicate. I've also not noticed any fading in the black/white leaf designs, and the plates have been both hand washed and cleaned in the dishwasher.

All in all I would definitely recommend these if you can get them at half price. They're modern and attractive yet understated with simplicity, they're good quality and size up well, so I'm glad to have purchased these when I did.

Selling on Argos for £13.32 on half price offer down from £29.99
