      A great novelty gift

My friend bought Mark and myself these mugs as a bit of a joke present for Christmas. The Blackboard Message Mug is a coffee mug that is perfectly functional as a regular mug but it has a blackboard around it. We were quite amused when we unwrapped them and didn't really see ourselves using them but they have become a bit of a joke in our house and get used everyday. The blackboard mugs come in a little blue and white box that has a retro feel to it, it comes complete with 2 sticks of white chalk to wite your messages with. The ceramic mugs are white in colour apart from the blackboard of course. The mug holds approximately 1/4 pint of liquid so a size ideal for coffee or tea if you prefer, not big enough for hot chocolate but that's just my opinion. The blackboard mug is not suitable for the dishwasher and can only be hand washed in cool water which really is a bit of a disadvantage especially if you are using these in an office where they often get left standing about and likely to stain. I would prefer to be able to give them a good dunk in hot soapy water. The blackboard mugs have a rounded handle on the side which personally I think it a little bit on the small side especially for men but as I said that's just my opinion. Its the blackboard part of the mug that is really their selling point. We use our blackboard mugs a lot at home and as regular old mugs they do their job perfectly well, they are a little smaller than I would like but they are OK. We do use the blackboard part of the mug, its a bit of a laugh, it mainly gets used for little messages sweet or otherwise and it often gets silly or rude. Its nice to make a cup of tea first thing for someone and write "good morning" on their mug. A few of us have got these at work now and it does mean you get the right cup of coffee with your name on it but as I said they are not really ideal for work as they can only be hand washed in cool water. The mug would make a nice stocking filler or gift for a child too, the blackboard part would be a good novelty. I never use them for genuine notes and messages its just not convenient and I cant say how long the blackboard part will last for but for a bit of fun at home or work these are a great little novelty mug. As I mentioned we received ours as gifts but they are available from Amazon for £3.74 or www.findmeagift.com where they are priced at £5.99. I would certainly recommend them as a novelty gift for both adults and children alike.

Personalise your mug the creative way.

If you're looking for an unusual gift for someone particularly hard to buy for then I would wholeheartedly recommend this Blackboard Message Mug from Hawkins Bazaar. I was looking for Easter present ideas but when I saw these any thoughts of religious gifts flew out of my mind and I decided to treat both myself and my granddaughters' to a new mug each. The basic idea is that this is a normal sized ceramic mug, only the majority of the cup is covered in a blackboard surface which you can decorate with chalks however the mood takes you. When you take it out of the wonderfully retro box you'll see the mug looks like a glass of Guinness as the clean blackboard is pristine black, while the top of the mug is shiny white. I couldn't wait until Easter and gave the girls' their mugs straight away, that Saturday evening we all sat around personalising our mugs then wiping it all off and starting again. The supplied chalks work well, they're strong and don't break which is handy as it's quite awkward trying to write or draw neatly on a cylindrical object! My nine year old granddaughter wore her chalks down quickly so I can confirm that any chalk will work well on these mugs, although we did discover that the white ones show up far better than the coloured chalks she has. The chalk is easy to remove from the blackboard surface, I don't tend to soak them as I worry that the blackboard coating will peel off although there is actually no evidence whatsoever that it will so perhaps I am worrying needlessly. A quick wipe with a damp cloth will remove all traces of chalk and leave you with a clean surface on which to write your next message. It amused us to think of comments we could leave on each others mugs and I laughed my socks off when the cheeky nine year old got into a mood and wrote LEAVE ME ALONE on hers! I think these mugs are excellent fun, I of course have my cups of tea in mine and it's fine in that respect too. The handle is comfortable to hold and it's stable when I put my hot drink down on the table. These mugs cost £4.99 each, which is excessive for a mug I suppose but it seemed reasonable considering they were supposed to be Easter presents - it's not Hawkin's fault that I couldn't wait and gave them to my granddaughters' much too early! It's great fun though and I think definitely worth the money, I suspect they could be quite fragile if you were overly careless but they seem sturdy enough to me. This isn't a mug I'll drink from every day as it's more a novelty item than anything. I'll get it out at the weekend when my granddaughters' are there to use theirs too but when I'm on my own I'll stick to my favourite mug as it's more my, well, cup of tea.

        Good product.

This mug makes a great gift for almost anyone! Its constructed well, and there is a lot of 'blackboard' space to write on the mug. The mug isn't cheaply made or anything either, so no worries about it breaking easily. Its a shame the whole mug isn't 'blackboard material', but i suppose it can't be as you need to be able to drink form it too! I got one as a gift too from a family member, and so far it has proved to be very useful! If there something little I need to remember then I can easily just stick it on my mug, reader for when i need it. You get two sticks of chalk in the box so if you break or loose one then you alwyas have one spare, you can always buy some chalk anyway if something does hapen, or if you end up using them both up! Overall i think this is a great little gift, and is also very comic!
