Highly recommend this lovely simple set.

The Ikea Fargrik 18 piece dinner service is the main dinner service we use every day. We have had it for several years now and it is still a fantastic simple service which we don't intend on replacing. Like everything in Ikea it is their own modern design dinner service that is only available from Ikea.

The eighteen piece dinner service includes six plates, six side plates and six bowls. The main plate is a 27cm circular plate that is a great size for serving a main meal on. The side plate is a 21cm circular plate that again is a decent size and is ample big enough to serve your sandwiches at lunch on. The bowl has a diameter of 16cms and its height is 7cms. We find it perfect size for our breakfast cereals, puddings and soups. When I moved out of the family home we borrowed an old dinner service of my mum's for quite some time but when we came across this set in Ikea we liked the plain simple design of it and the excellent price!

The dinner service is plain with no design integrated into it or painted on it. The circular shape to the set gives a crisp finish and the simpleness of it gives a nice elegance to it. The 18 piece dinner service is a great starter pack for you and even though it doesn't include mugs in the set this didn't bother us as we have a lovely odd collection of mugs we have built up over the last few years. The set is dishwasher safe; unfortunately I seem to be the dishwasher in our house. It is also microwave safe too which I can vouch for as we quite often put them in the microwave especially the bowls for doing porridge in the morning in!

The dinner service is available in numerous colours we have an eighteen piece in white and an eighteen piece in black too. It is also available in dark lilac, green (which is a light lime green shade), orange and turquoise. We choose the white and black as they complement each other well and can be used together and make the table look simple and classic like the service itself. I feel the two colours don't age like other colours tend to do.

We love this set it works so well and on the occasions we have people round for a meal it sits on our old dark table nicely giving it a nice crisp look. The set has a lovely shine to it making it gleam when it's sat on a table. As the dinner ware is plain it is easy to clean. We have had our two sets for a few years now and it hasn't faded or started to age it looks as good as it did when we bought it.

The set can be easily extended with the option of buying mugs to match the set and a deep plate too. We didn't buy the mugs as I explained we prefer our odd collection of mugs. But we did buy the deep plates to add to the set in white and black. The deep plates are excellent for pasta dishes and stews as they are somewhere in-between a dinner plate and a bowl. We find they were an excellent addition to the dinner service. All the items can be bought separately.

      The prices are as follows:

      Bowl 80 pence
      Dinner plate 80 pence
      Side plate 80 pence
      Deep plate £2
Mug was 60 pence currently reduced to 35 pence

The eighteen piece dinner set can be bought for £15 from Ikea which is a great price for a timeless set that will set your table up well. That said Ikea do you have you on a little bit as if you were to buy the set separately it would cost you £14.40! So I guess you are paying 60 pence for it all being packed up together if you buy the set. Never the less I am very happy with the set and can't complain.

Good as an everyday dinner set

I am quite fussy when it comes to things for my home and have therefore spent literally years searching for the 'perfect' dinner set without any luck (yes I know I'm sad!). In the meantime I was using some handed down plates, however I'd had them quite a long time and many had become chipped or damaged. My husband suggested that we buy a basic plain white set to replace them whilst I continued my elusive search for the plates of my dreams!! As we were visiting IKEA anyway, we ended up buying this Fargrik set.

The Fargrik dinner set comes in a choice of black, white, green or 'dark lilac' which personally I would describe as plum. All items are plain with no pattern. We went for the white as we felt it was the most versatile.

We bought this as an 18 piece set, which includes six each of dinner plates, side plates and bowls. Mugs are available to purchase separately, however we chose not to buy them because I didn't like the design.

Strangely, you can buy this set in a choice of stoneware or earthenware which I did not realise at the time of purchase. I believe we have the earthenware set although it's not written on the back of the plates and the box is long gone.

In terms of design the set is very basic, but I do like the curved shape of each item. The dinner and side plates do not have a lip instead just gently curve upwards at the edges. As I was used to plates with a lip I did find this a little strange at first, especially as it looks like there is less food on your plate at times! The other side of this is that you could inadvertently end up with bigger portion sizes. The same goes for the bowls which are rounded and quite deep - I found I was eating twice as much cereal as I was with my last shallower bowls and had to remind myself only to fill them half way.

The plates are dishwasher safe but as we don't have a dishwasher we always wash these by hand and have had no problems doing so. One thing I have found - and which is slightly disappointing - is that a few of the plates have developed silvery looking scratches on them, presumably from knives scraping against them, so they don't look their best, despite only having owned them for around five months. We haven't had any breakages yet and all of the items in the set feel of good quality.

We paid £17 for this set from IKEA, however having just checked the IKEA website it seems that each item in the set can be purchased for just 80p each. This means it would have worked out cheaper to have bought each item separately (£14.40 in total) which is a little annoying to discover!

Overall this is an OK set if you are looking for something basic, perhaps for your first home or just as a spare set for Christmas or just as an everyday set as we are using them. The design is simple, clean and modern and the price is fairly good for an 18 piece set (even better if you buy the items individually, as I have just found out!).
