Ikea Kalas Bowls
My husband bought these bowls along with a set of matching plastic tumblers, in the summer of 2013.
Being an Ikea product, these Kalas bowls are only available at this wonderful purveyor of all things you didn't realize you needed until you saw it. Yes reader, these bowls were an impulse buy, but at an inexpensive price equivalent to 90 pence. (That's also the current price as at Feb 2014.)
The bowls come in a set of six. Each is a different bright colour: orange, green, blue, purple, pink and yellow. When I first wrote this review I was convinced that we have two lime green bowls and no yellow. However I was completely wrong - perhaps I should get my eyes checked!
The bowls are made from polypropylene plastic, they are approximately 12cm in diameter. They have a pretty floral imprint at the bottom of the bowl, giving our daughter something to look for as she finishes her food.
We have been using the bowls for close to eight months now. We find them to be a great size, very durable and easy to use and to clean. They are reportedly microwave (up to 100C) and dishwasher safe (up to 70C), although we only wash these by hand in warm-hot soapy water.
We do only use them for comestibles, but I could see that these may make cute storage containers for small arts and crafts items.
There is a note on the Ikea website that this product can be recycled, so that is something to be aware of when the time comes.
Definitely! We love these bowls and use them all the time. Highly recommended.

I bought these bowls when I was weaning my first baby and they have been used everyday since then. They are £1 and you get six different colours in each pack. Also available in the range are plates, cups and knives, forks and spoons. Boots the chemist has a similar product and they are £1.49 for 6, so these are a great bargain and I think you would be hard pressed to find such a quality product for the same price.
A word of warning, Ikea, have changed the shape and colour of these bowls. The picture of the bowls attached to this review are oval shaped, with a small base and wider rim. The new bowls are round, with a wide flat base. I believe Ikea periodically change the colour of the Kalas range as my Children's Centre had the cups and plates and they are a different colour to the ones I have.
The bowls come in colourful plastic and they are really sturdy - I haven't had one get damaged yet. As I said, the shape has changed. Being rounder makes them easier for smaller hands to carry and the flatter base makes them harder to knock over. The difference between the old and new styles is minimal, as I've had both versions.
These bowls are really handy. I remember thinking I'll never need 6, but my children are constantly using them. They are a great size for weaning and whilst my 3 year old now needs bigger bowls for his meals, they are the perfect size for snacks. The fact that 6 come in a pack is great for when we have other children over. The bowls are stackable, so they don't take up much space.
Just recently I found myself doing a major shop in Ikea with my Mother. I hadn't really gone in looking for much at all but its always the same way with Ikea.....I spend a fortune cos everything seems so cheap!
I spotted these brightly coloured plastic bowls and bought them with a few other plastic items. I liked the idea of them to use in the garden, for picnics and a few of my friends have children and I thought they would be more suitable that risking my nice dinner set getting broken!
For just 90p I got a set of 6 coloured bowls and each one is plain, unbreakable, dishwasher and microwave safe and the colours I got in my pack was one each of orange, pink, blue, green, yellow and red and each one is 12 cm in diameter meaning that these dishes are rather deep and you can get rather alot of stuff in them. Although rather plain in appearance and you can see through them like the matching cups I bought from this range they do have lines to the bottom of each one which is simply a bit of detail in a lighter shade of each colour.
They are easy to wash up and dry (I do mine by hand as I don't own a dishwasher!), they are stackable which is space saving and I can even pop them in the microwave and like I stated earlier you can't break these which is a fantastic thing!
Mine have been used often for family BBQs and my friends children and so on and although as I say used often I have had no issues with these whatsoever and they still look as good as new.
These are a nice set of brightly coloured dishes, versatile and do what I need and expect from them and for that reason they get a very high recommendation from me!
Only available in Ikea stores.

My mother in law bought us these bowls for our children and they have come in really useful.
My Mrs usually buys individual bowls which have pictures of characters on and are really very attractive yet always cost quite a bit of money. We needed to get more bowls and also needed some which would be more practical for taking out with us or on holiday and when my mother in law brought these for us we were pleased.
They are not very fancy as they don't have lots of details on them but we really don't need that! These are more about being practical than attractive but you do get different colours in the pack so that makes them look a bit more exciting.
In the pack we got 6 bowls and my mother in law said it only cost 90p! 90p for 6 bowls?! i find that amazing value!
They are deep, oval-shaped bowls made from a thin but robust plastic. They are both dishwasher and microwave safe although we tend to hand wash them and don't put them in the microwave for long but they are apparently safe to do so.
The colours are almost see-through and just one colour per bowl they are all different which has caused some falling out before when friends have been round and all the girls wanted the pink one but usually it's fine and it's nice to have a variety of colours to choose from anyway!
We use these for lots of things and they are really tough. Our little boy is 18 months old and has a habit of throwing things especially his plates and bowls! These bowls have been launched across the room on many occasion yet are still completely fine! They really are robust!
We use them for fruit, puddings, little snacks and we also take these on holiday with us as they stack inside each other so don't take up much room and are very practical. Our daughter (4) likes to use these to play picnics with with her teddies which is cute and find because we know they won't come to any harm or get ruined as they are so robust!
They're easy to clean as they're only smooth and they don't really damage either not like when you have plates and bowls where pictures gradually fade, these just stay the same! I find leaving cereal in the bowl for any longer than 20 minutes makes it quite difficult to clean off though so always best to wash them as soon as possible.
They are very durable and great quality. I usually think for something so cheap you get let down somewhere along the way but not with these! They are brilliant, we highly recommend them.
I bought these bowls on a trip to Ikea a month or so before my son was born, I knew he wouldn't be using them for a while but I loved the bright colours and I don't live close to an Ikea so I wasn't likely to be there again soon.
I started using these for him as soon as I started weaning as they are a good size to put a small amount of food it. They come in a pack 5 bright colours and I think they only cost 99p. At the time of purchase I had no idea how much I would use them!
My son is now two and he still uses one every morning for his porridge at breakfast time! Although they are now too small to fit a main meal in for him I still use them for putting snacks in for him. I have now started re-using them for my daughter now we have started weaning.
It is only now after 2 years that the insides have started to show signs of wear, but they are still perfectly usable. I have now bought another pack so I always have plenty to hand. Ikea now seem to have updated this set now though as new ones of these are wider, rounder bowls. I like them but still prefer the originals as the size and shape fills a gap in the market. I did also buy some of the new style ones, they come in the same funky colours and are more suited to bigger portions.
For the price, I have been astounded by the quality. They get used everyday and after each use they go in the dishwasher, and more often than not they go in the microwave. They have been fantastic value for money, they look great, they have a long lifespan and I would recommend these over and over again.
I have a few sets of these Ikea plastic bowls and they are very useful and durable. They are just the right size for kids' portions of fruit, snacks and desserts, and I they are thick enough to easily withstand hot puddings too. After 5 years of dishwashing, the first set I bought have virtually no wear and tear at all - fab! They come in a pack of 6 assorted colours, which are bright and appealing, and they cost under £1 a pack so they are such fab value. They are much less flimsy / transparent than similar plastic bowls I had previously bought from the supermarket, which seemed more semi-disposable, whereas these are long-lasting.
Co-ordinating with the rest of the Kalas range of cutlery, plates and cups, the bowls are ideal for general home use, parties and even use at kids clubs or more commercial settings, such is their durability. The bowls are actually more durable than the plates, but I think this is more because we have used metal knives on the plates and not on the bowls, and also the dishwasher doesn't damage the inside of the bowls. The only problem I ever have with them in our house is when my 3 kids fight over who gets which colour :-)
This pack of six plastic bowls matches the Kalas plates and plastic cutlery set. The bowls are in 6 different colours and are in a tough, durable plastic. Unlike the matching plates, these bowls did not scratch easily, and they served us well for about 4 years before we got rid of them (they were still useable, it's just that my children had grown out of using them). The bowls are quite small (about 4 1/2" across, and are just big enough for child-sized portions. They are easy to clean and can be put in the microwave and dishwasher. The pack of six bowls is cheap at about £1, and is extremely good value.
We got these bowls mainly because we needed something tough that would not break easily, and these bowls delivered. This is a really useful product, and it's good that you can buy them as part of a stylish matching set.
These little plastic bowls are another exceptionally cheap and cheerful purchase from Ikea! It is the little happy bargains like this that make going into the horrific place just about bearable!
This is a pack of six plastic bowls measuring 11cm in diameter. Each bowl is a different colour, and the colours are blue, green, yellow, red, orange, and pink. The bowls easily stack one inside the other when you put them away, and are microwave and dishwasher safe. And best of all? The pack of six costs a wonderfully small 90p!
A million uses
My main reason for buying these bowls was for my daughter to use. And I didn't simply buy them for her to eat out of - I figured they would also come in handy for different craft activities and games too! Now I do have nicer bowls that I tend to use for cereal, pasta and so on, but when I have used these for her to eat out of they have worked just fine and they wash well too, both when being washed by hand or in the dishwasher.
They are great for snacks like grapes, raisins or slices of apple - and I've used them for snacks for grown-up visitors too like nuts and crisps! The fact that these are microwave safe is an added bonus as they are great for heating up small quantities of food such as baked beans.
We have also used these for when we cook together - they come in really handy when there is something to stir and I want to give my daughter a bowl to use that won't break! We've used them for glitter and sequins when we're doing crafts too. She also loves having picnics and tea parties with her toys and especially enjoys using water on these adventures, so these bowls often come out to play make believe games.
A great buy
Despite all this usage, the bowls really are still as good as new with no signs of wear and tear at all. They are made of pretty strong plastic so are durable and can handle being dropped on the floor numerous times.
These are a fantastic buy and I would highly recommend them if you have young children as they come in so handy. For the price you really can't go wrong!
*** You can also buy six cups, six plates and an 18-piece cutlery set in this range - all for 90p each. ***
I bought these Ikea Kalas plastic childrens bowls for our little nephew to use when he stays with us. It's easier and less hassle to just duplicate a lot of things as he stays with us so often.
The bowls were the bargain price of just 90 pence from Ikea. You get 6 bowls for 90 pence, 1 of each in the following colours; dark blue, light blue, green, yellow, orange and pink.
The Ikea Kalas range also consists of a set of 6 plates, a set of 6 mugs, and an 18 piece cutlery set. All are available for just 90 pence per set, and each set consists of the same 6 colourways.
The bowls are both microwave and dishwasher safe. In fact the whole of the Kalas range is microwave and dishwasher safe. I quite often put the bowls in the microwave and I've had no problems whatsoever. The bowls have been in the dishwasher more times than I care to remember and they are all absolutely fine.
The bowls are stackable so they take up hardly any space in a drawer or cupboard. They are the perfect size for a small toddler to eat out of, and our little nephew loves choosing the colour that he wants to eat out of that day.
These are actually really durable and sturdy little bowls, I've been really impressed with them, especially for the low price. They have a matt finish to the exterior of the bowl making them easy for little hands to grip and hold on to and they won't slip out of little hands.
They are the perfect size for cereal, or yoghurt and fruit, or little snacks for a toddler.
We have lost a couple of the bowls along the way, you take them out with you for a picnic, and sometimes they don't end all up coming home with you! But at the end of the day there's 6 bowls in the set so there's plenty more left. And even if you end up buying another set, well it's only 90 pence.
An absolute bargain, will definately buy another set.
I love Ikea and think there are some real bargains in store.
One range which I think is real value for money is the Kalas range. We already had the plates but decided to buy the bowls too.
This is a pack of six brightly coloured bowls which measure approximately 5 cm deep and 11 cm wide. Each pack has 6 plastic bowls in, pink, red, orange, blue, yellow and green.
*RRP and availability*
The set of 6 bowls costs just 90p. I have just checked and they cannot be ordered online however they are available in store and you can also check stock availability on line.
In the Kalas range, Ikea also sell the following:
6 x plates for 90p
6 x cups for 90p
18 piece cutlery set for 90p
All are multi-coloured, durable and dish washer and microwave safe.
I think these are still an absolute bargain and have never seen any other places sell these so reasonably priced. You would normally pay more than 90p for one bowl, never mind six.
When my daughter was starting to feed herself, a lot of the bowls I had were quite shallow and she ended up with more on her tray (in the highchair) than in the bowl. There were really handy as about twice as deep and normal plastic bowls.
I have two sets of these, one which we use for food and I use the other when we do craft activities. The bowls are ideal for putting glitter, foam pieces or paint in and really easy to wash.
In the summer, I have also used these when we have had a BBQ, using with the other accessories they look quite nice and co-ordinated.
We have had our sets for over 3 years now and not suffered any breakages etc so I have found them very hardwearing.
I would recommend these to everyone, 5 out of 5 stars from me.
Thanks for reading

I'm a big fan of Ikea - I find that they do a wide range of products from furniture to bits and bobs for the kitchen and even decorative items and all are good quality, stylish and best of all cheap! I far prefer them over similarly priced stores such as Argos as you can look at the products before you buy them easily. Having an Ikea practically on my doorstep these days, I do tend to pop in there about once a month when I'm well enough, and see what I can spot.
One of my favourite 'small' acquisitions from there has to be this Kalas range of brightly coloured plates, bowls and cutlery. This review is about the bowls.
I bought mine for 90p for a pack of six, and I got 4 packs - sounds a bit over the top, but it was with purpose in mind! We often have barbecues and I do really hate using paper plates that have to be thrown away afterwards. Having plastic plates and bowls means that I can wash and re-use them, but being plastic it won't matter if they get knocked about a bit by being outside.
These are about 11cm in diameter, and as I say you get six of them in a pack for 90p which makes each bowl just 15p each (works out cheaper than paper ones too after two or three uses) the colours you get are green, blue, red, orange, yellow and pink - one of each per pack - and they're nice and bright and look quite good too.
In terms of usability I have to say these are pretty cool - they're microwave safe, dishwasher safe, and in the time I've had mine, they've kept their colour and shape etc. really well. None of them are looking tired as some plastic items of this nature can get, and I have to say the kids (nieces and nephews mostly) are always happy to use them when they come over which is good because I don't have to worry about breakages there this way. We've also used them for a number of barbecues, and as bowls to put munchies out in when we've had people over for drinks.
I'm very pleased with this purchase and would highly recommend them to anyone as a really good buy for garden use, kids, or even just as regular every day use if you needed cheap bowls to be honest.
