Advantages: Cooks well
Disadvantages: Heavy and can be expensive
I have a number of Le Creuset items and this is a great addition to my collection. I have the pan in Almond and it is 26cm in diameter, it is square, made from cast iron, which means it is very heavy and I purchased mine in a 40% off sale at Debenhams a few years ago, they currently retail for around £60 on Amazon (September 2012).
The Grillit has a black interior and has ribbed lines running along it so when you use it you get char lines along your food. The interior has a satin black finish that is not shiny and it is specifically designed to give excellent cooking results, providing it is used correctly. The Grillit can be used for almost anything from meat to vegetables. The interior of the pan will keep its finish and as you use it it develops what is called a 'patina', which is basically a blackish film that results from the oils used in cooking and the juices of cooking, these should not be cleaned off, as they add to the flavour and performance of your cooking.
I mostly cook vegetables on my Grillit, particularly corn on the cob. I use my pan by first putting it on the gas hob and leaving it to heat up, this takes around 3 minutes, I then brush the interior with oil using a silicon pastry brush and put the corn on the cobs on the Grillit, I leave them until they smell as if they are about the burn and then turn them over, this gives the cobs a great char line and BBQ smokiness in taste.
After I have finished using the Grillit, I leave it to cool on the hob, it is best to put the Grillit on a suitable surface as it will scorch or damage your work top. I then gently wipe it with a damp cloth, being careful not to remove the 'patina' I have developed. If you find that you have brunt your food or add too much oil, you can clean the pan gently with a non abrasive cloth and hot, slightly soapy water. The Girllit also come with a 25 year guarantee, you just need to fill in the form that comes with Grillit and send it off to Le Creuset.
Overall I would recommend the Grillit to others, as it works well, leaves food looking great, and is easy to use, the only downside is that it is very heavy and it is expensive, so for that reason alone it looses 1 star.
