According to their website MacDonald is a small family run business established in 1987 who sell decorated fine bone china, porcelain gift ware and collectables. Their products are sold at Crufts, other dog shows, country fairs, game fairs, animal orientated events and agricultural shows.
If you look at their website you will see the vast array of designs they sell - from steam trains to tractors to animals and birds.
This mug was given to me on my Birthday form my sister - who probably picked it up when visiting a local show.
Now to get the controversial stuff out of the way first - both my sister and I had golly things during our childhoods way back in the 1950s and '60s. We also collected the golly badges off the marmalade jars. To us a golly was just a gender neutral rag toy just like a teddy bear - and had no racial significance - either good or bad. We also had gollies in our Rupert books and Enid Blyton stories.
Therefore we still like items which have gollies on - with both me buying for her and vice versa. My son knows of my liking for gollies too and not long ago got me a kitchen memo board featuring one at a teddy bears picnic.
So I like the golly image as an innocent childhood item - nothing more.
This mug is quite tall and slim - but it does hold half a pint the same as standard mugs. The slight curve to the handle makes it look a little more dainty. - as does the slight curve outwards at the top of the mug.
As well as having a large image of a cute golly on the front there is one inside the mug and a small one on the reverse.
I have used this mug and it is nice to drink form as the china has a thin lip to it - rather than some earthenware mugs which are very thick and chunky.
However I prefer to keep my mug on display in a glass cupboard with my Rupert ornaments so that it won't get broken.
MacDonald do sell another golly mug which has striped trousers but he is fatter and not so cute. The golly on this mug looks as if he is made of fur fabric and has red trousers and a blue jacket with a bright yellow waistcoat and yellow bow tie. His hands are white and he has a cute smiling face.
As well as mugs MacDonald also do other golly items such as egg cups, plates, salt and pepper sets and trinket dishes with lids.
