“ Brand: Paladone / Product Type: Mug „
I have a Henry Hoover and it cheers me up to have quote novel/ cute home products. I had previously looked online to see what other (if any) Henry merchandise is out there and was a little disappointed at the search results as you can't really get a great deal of things. Then I spotted this Henry face Mug in the Next directors for £5. I bought one and was very happy with it.
You get a standard size mug with a decent size handle. The mug is made from your standard mug crockery (ie smashable if dropped) and holds your average sized mug of tea or coffee. This product is aimed at adults as it is breakable, it is a standard size- so it is not one of those mugs where it will hold the equivalent of 3 mugs of coffee etc., - it is just the standard mug size.
The design is printed on the mug and goes all the way around. There is a picture of Henry's smiling face on both sides of the mug and the handle is all white- as in the photo.
After using this mug less than 5 times, we noticed when washing the mug that the handle was starting to feel a bit loose- as if it was about to fall off. It was sort of 'grinding' when you moved the handle and so I made the decision to return the mug to Next for a replacement as I had not had the mug for long and mugs, in my opinion should last for years- not just a few weeks. Especially as we had not dropped or done anything to break the mug.
Also, ss a precaution (in case this was from a bad batch) I wrote to the manufacturers Paladone Products just so they were aware of the fault and could look into it. I was not asking for a replacement as Next sent me a replacement- it was more a case of just trying to be helpful in case something had gone wrong in production. I was surprised when Paladone sent me a letter and a new mug! So, now I have two Henry mugs (the one with the bad handle was returned to Next- who replaced it) and they have both served our house well for the past 3 years being in almost daily use and I have had no further issues or problems with them.
The mugs are white inside so this will show up and tea or coffee stains- I find I generally prefer mugs that are coloured inside as they seem to stain less. I paid £5 for the original mug, but I have seen these advertised on other websites for £8-£22 (!) each so I think the slight 'cult' status of the Henry Hoover is pushing up the prices.
I am giving the Henry Mug a 3 out of 5 stars because it is your 'average' mug. Although the printing is of a high quality and none of the print has washed off or faded since I bought it, the mug does stain very easily with the white interior and as the mug is a standard size and shape (unlike other novelty mugs I have seen) I don't think I would pay over £5 for this mug. I was very impressed with the customer service from Paladone the manufacturers and would buy their products again but the mug is just a standard mug. It will appeal to Henry fans and is great for a secret santa gift etc.,
Paladone Henry Face Mug
A number of years back, who would have thought that the hoover which had been given the name of 'Henry' would have become so big and well loved! A few years back, who would have realized that I would marry someone obsessed with Henry the hoover!
Not so long ago, our little Henry hoover (bless his dusty plastic socks) died, and I manage to persuade my other half that a 'normal' upright hoover was the way to go, and I thought that was the end of it, boy was I wrong! Not long after, I noticed a few Henry merchandise creeping into our house! Not only that, the Henry merchandise was accompanied by the pink equivalent; Hetty! One item in particular was a Henry Face Mug.
I do not know whether it is because of the Henry obsession or the obsession with face mugs which possessed my other half to purchase this mug, though either way here was Henry sitting on my breakfast table, staring right at me!
The mug can be picked up on Amazon from £3.99, though I have also seen it up to £10.00 which I think is a terrible price!
The mug is a strong stoneware, though like all mugs, will break or chip when dropped or banged against something (I have unfortunately not managed to do this by 'accident' yet!!). It is an average sized mug holding up to 300ml. The design is simple, though fully recognizable to the Henry collection with a black third at the top with the Henry words upon it, and a red 2/3 part at the bottom complete with smiley face (which does grow on you after a while). The handle, like the rest of the mug, is well made and quite thick so you have something to hold on to without worrying that it will snap in half.
The mug also comes in a cardboard Henry box which for some unearthly reason, my other half has kept! Collectors among you may understand this, though it is beyond me!!
The mug is dishwasher and microwave safe. We have not put it in the microwave, though it has been for a clean in the dishwasher many times and has come out completely unharmed (unfortunately for me!)
My other half loves this mug, and although it is not for me, it is a well made mug though in the end it is just a mug, so spending £10.00 on it is completely over the top in my opinion!
Recommended for those who love Henry
Also available in the Hetty form.
It's generally accepted you should never have a favourite child but it's OK to have a favourite mug. One of the problems I have with my own children is that any time I give a little treat or spend some quality time with one of them (there are four) I am likely to be accused of having a favourite. That's a tough accusation coming from a petulant touchy teenager so to try and deflect the flak I have taken to declaring that only Henry will ever be my favourite. (Henry is our vacuum cleaner: the one with the smiley face.) I thought the kids didn't really believe me until I received a fathers' day gift of the Henry Mug. Obviously, this has to be my favourite mug now!
The Henry Mug comes in a sturdy cardboard box illustrated with a Henry "face" on two sides and illustrations of the mug itself on the other two sides and the lid. The slogans "Take a break with Henry" and "Once you're all done and dusted, sit down and have a cuppa with Henry" also appear. All very good humoured and appropriate for a dedicated Henry user (great little vacuum cleaner by the way). The mug itself is quite substantial, holding about half a pint of tea, is white inside and underneath but with a Henry face on the front and back and the Henry name on a black background above this, similar to the "Bowler hat" top of the vacuum cleaner. The design of the eyes and mouth on the mug appear to be identical to those on the cleaner while the nose is just where the hose would exit. The font used for the Henry name also appears to be identical (the mug is made under a licence from Numatic, the makers of the Henry cleaner so probably we should expect this authenticity). On the other hand the colour is quite a poor match. That on the mug is a pillar box red while the cleaner is a slightly lighter and more orangey red. Unfortunately, side by side they clash noticeably.
The mug is dishwasher and microwave safe and so far mine has survived well with no chips or fine cracks in the glaze, which is a problem I have had with some cheaper mugs. The handle is very large - I can get three fingers through it - which helps provide good support when the mug is full (and heavy). It does get hot but not enough to burn you, at least in my experience. With this kind of material (glazed pottery) there is obviously no affect on taste and unlikely to be any contamination from leaching of chemicals into your hot drink so I would rate it as safe to use too.
The box is recyclable cardboard (though you may wish to keep it). On the other hand the mug has been made in China so most of the cost you pay will be for transport and distribution. The carbon footprint may also be higher than for a locally produced item.
A couple of months ago I was helping out a friend of mine put together a chest of drawers and through our lives of helping each other out with various tasks and topics she thrust a gift in my hand saying only the words, "when I saw this I thought of you!" to which I didn't think much of at the time until I got home to open my little gift!
When I got home I was greeted with a red box with a black top and although my friend had covered the main title of the box, with this Henry vacuum "face" gift box, I initially wondered if it was another desktop battery fitted vacuum to go along with the one I already have. But no.... instead it turns out to be a stoneware coffee/drinks mug with Henry's big and wide eyes looking up at me and his cheeky smile! Just the perfect tea break mug to make my cleaner friends jealous!
I'm not one for mugs I have to admit and most of my drinking mugs don't follow a regular pattern. However for a clean freak like me, I just adore Henry the drinks mug! Made in a 100% stoneware material and quite substantial to hold with white being the ordered colour of the day as a perimeter "frame", you'll find you won't be able to resist agreeing with the cheeky smile of the famous vacuum cleaner with his trademark red and black face, complete with his name in large white letters on a black back ground just like his normal body vacuum cleaner. Paladone have done well to produce a good copy again just like my little desktop "PC" vacuum and on the mug, of Henry's face here, Paladone have stuck to his trademark hose "nose" which also has the same screw lines as the real vacuum in real life and those droopy cute eyes complete with black and white eye balls. His face and nameplate is also repeated on the other side of the mug making this a quality mug for both left and right-handers showing off their favourite friend.
One of the best things about Henry the mug is that he can take up to 300ml of water, making it a considerable mug perfect for tea breaks. He is also fairly well made with a white coloured handle that feels thick, heat insulated and substantial. However being a stoneware mug means that whilst he is fairly able to hold hot drinks and keep them hot for a while like other normal stoneware mugs, his body is too hot to hold and the base can also get too hold, even though it has a slightly raised rim. Still, the mug is fairly practical and well designed with a smooth rim at the top making it dead easy to drink out of. The fact that there are no abundant sharp edges on this mug makes it suitable for all ages.
Generally, Henry the mug is microwave safe and unusually for a design this vibrant, dishwasher safe. I was initially worried that the bright sheen of his red paint would come off through intensive washes in our dishwasher, but he seems to take it all in his stride and his paintwork still shines very easily after two months of ownership.
The best news of all is that Henry the mug is also available in pink under "Hetty," for those who love (or own) Hetty the pink vacuum in real life and Paladone also make an all gloss black mug with a smaller red Henry showing the slogan "Time for Tea, Henry," which would be the most perfect gift for a cleaner!
All in all if you own or love the idea of a Henry in your home, this is a great mug to consider. The only downside that Henry the mug has is escalating prices from greedy sellers. At certain private shops for example the mug should cost around £3 but online the price shoots up to £10 or even £15. Amazon UK has this mug on sale at £3-95, which is a far better compromise! So, if you want cheered up in the mornings just out of bed and preparing your first cup of salvation, what better than to do it with Henry's cheeky smile looking up at you? It may not remind you to buy dust bags for your normal vacuum cleaner but it may make you feel happier! Thanks for reading. ©Nar2 2010
