Advantages: Tough, long lasting, well sized, can be used in most kitchen appliances
Disadvantages: None at all
Although I am not one to spend money when unnecessary, I have spent a little extra on oven proof dishes as I always go for Pyrex dishes and bowls as I think their quality is unbeatable.
I have a Pyrex casserole dish which I have owned now for a good couple of years and it is still in A1 condition now. It is used at least once every two weeks and is still going strong even now.
They do their casserole dishes in both oval and round shapes and in all different sizes and the one I own is the round 2.0L casserole dish.
This casserole dish is made from Borosilicate Glass and has high thermal shock resistance which is pretty important when it comes to oven proof dishes. This dish is ovenproof, freezer proof, dishwasher proof and microwave safe and they come with a 10 year guarantee against manufacturer defects. It also claims to be stain resistant and doesn't retain flavours.
This dish is the perfect size for a family of 4 like us as I can do a casserole or similar meal and I can fit the entire meal into this dish for the family so I don't create extra washing up by having to use two dishes or other kitchen items unnecessarily.
The clear glass bowl comes with a glass lid and both the bowl itself and the lid come with handles so you can easily carry the bowl in its entirety or you can carry the bowl and handle separately via the handles if required. The bowl is quite heavy, even when empty but that to me hasn't ever proved a problem as even when full, it still isn't too heavy to carry with ease. I quite like the fact that it is heavy as it proves its quality to me as the glass does feel really thick.
The price of these dishes does vary depending on the shape and size of bowl you have, but I purchased this one for around £8.50, which you may think is a little over the top for a casserole dish, but it has proven to be well worth its money and I have no doubt that it will continue to be a dish that I will use for years to come before needing replacing.
Although it claims to be stain resistant, the glass doesn't stay completely clear and new looking the entire time you own it. Although it is really easy to clean, both by hand and via the dishwasher, you do find that over time, you do get some marks on the dish that aren't easy to get rid of, but generally, considering the amount of time I have owned this dish for, it is in pretty perfect condition still for its age.
Overall, although some might think that £8.50 is a little expensive for a bog standard casserole dish, I would disagree when it comes to Pyrex. I do own a few Pyrex items in the kitchen due to its outstanding quality and longevity. I have had more than my money's worth out of this casserole dish and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another in the future should the need arise. The dish is easy to handle, easy to clean, is a really good size and can be used in most kitchen appliances. I highly recommend this casserole dish as it is the best I have used by a long way.
Summary: A great casserole dish from the Pyrex range
