Advantages: Great display

Disadvantages: Bulky

The image quality of this monitor is simply stunning. It beats Sony’s top of the range 19” monitor for crying out loud! It has a visible range of 15.9” which is lower than most 17” monitors, if not by much. But what it does have is the ability to run in a resolution of 1280x1024 at a flicker free resolution of 88hz, a feat a lot of 19” monitors can’t manage. This means that I can fit lots of information on the screen without it becoming a nasty, flickery, blurred mess. It’s a Diamondtron screen, which is Mitsubishis attempt at copying Sony Trinitron technology and they did a good job of it (A better one than Sony in fact) and means the screen is completely flat, so flat that when you first get it it looks concave! You also get two inputs on the back, the standard D-Sub and 5 bnc connectors for connecting to graphics workstations. However two switch between the two you have to navigate the On Screen Display (OSD) and it is a complete and utter nightmare to get around. You get three buttons which navigate you through a total of 25 menus! The adjustments are split into four groups and each function has it’s own separate submenu and to get back to the main menu you have to select an item of the sub menu. Bleugh! Luckily, once the monitor is setup you shouldn’t have to go near the OSD. Overall it’s a stunning, if a touch pricey monitor.

Update – One year after purchasing.
==========================
I’ve noticed that the Red and Blue guns don’t seem to be quite as aligned as they used to be, this is most noticeable in DOS screens. Most of the time I can’t see it, for example, as I write this in word I can’t notice it. While the monitor does have a horizontal RGB convergence setting it only fixes the problem in certain parts of the screen. However, bear this in mind – the monitor (for reasons of space) has to be fairly near one of my hi-fi speakers which could
have upset it mildly. Despite this minor niggle, it’s still the best display I’ve ever used.
