Advantages: Value for money
Disadvantages: ~Nokia??
Sony's innovative FD Trinitron flat-tube technology commingled with Nokia's electronic enhancements results in the Nokia 446Pro, which offers solid image quality at price that corporate customers can stomach. Although some high-end, conventional-tube, 19-inch models provide better image quality at a lower price, the Trinitron flat-screen technology on this Nokia offers eye-pleasing, distortion-free images that the others can't touch. Sumptuous Color, Good Clarity Nokia's vibrant hues and sharpness of images and text pleased our image-quality jurors. Not surprisingly, the Nokia's performance in CNET Labs' tests closely mimicked that of Sony's $699 Multiscan CPD-G400, which uses the same cutting-edge tube technology. As with similarly equipped competitors, Nokia's flat CRT reduces the distortion and glare from which conventional curved CRT monitors suffer. The $649 446Pro produces solid images at resolutions as high as 1,600 by 1,200 at 85 Hz on an 18-inch-viewable screen. Simple, Accurate Controls The Nokia offers a simple, three-button approach to navigating the onscreen display. One button turns on the controls and selects the adjusted setting, and a pair of cursor keys leads you through the selections. A good-sized screen that's both easy on the eyes and painless to the pocketbook, the Nokia 446Pro warrants a close look. If you prefer the solid reputation of a leading brand, Sony offers the competing Multiscan CPD-G400--a compelling choice for just a few dollars more. Or if your budget can't accommodate the latest technological innovations, two CNET Editors' Choice products--Hitachi's SuperScan Elite 751 and ViewSonic's G790--offer no-compromise image quality for less than $500. Both the Hitachi and ViewSonic models keep costs low by using traditional, nonflat tubes, yet they outpaced the Sony and Nokia flat CRT offerings in CNET Labs' image-quality tests.
