“ Brand: Georg Jensen / Product Type: Cheese Knife „
Georg Jensen is a Scandinavian Luxury Lifestyle brand founded in Copenhagen in 1904 specialising in silver jewellery and cutlery. Over time the range has expanded to include other homewares and they have opened stores throughout Europe, The United States and Asia. They proudly claim to be "the only real Scandinavian lifestyle and luxury brand". I work for another Danish firm and for the last few years have been fortunate enough to receive Georg Jensen Living products as a Christmas gift. This year we received their Forma Cheese Board and Serving Knife.
The product is packed in a 39cm square box which is 5cm deep. The packaging is simple and stylish - beige and black with a small photo (as above) of the product on the top of the box. Inside, securely packed in its specially shaped packaging is the board and knife. The board is kind of kidney shaped, it reminds me of the shape of an artist's palette and you can see from the picture that the sides are curved making it look that bit different from a traditional cheese board. It is made of oak and is quite heavy (1.2kg) as it is solid, so it is quite difficult to hold in one hand as I am petite. According to the leaflet that came with it, it has apparently been treated with natural mineral oils to prevent drying out and cracking. Recommended care includes using linseed oils or similar to help protect the wood (I have not done this though), but avoid food oils such as olive oil as they can go rancid. Washing should be done by hand using hot water and usual washing up detergent, dried with a clean towel and stored in a dry place.
The accompanying stainless steel cheese knife is curved also, and approx 22.5cm long. The handle is rounded and a comfortable size and shape to hold, there are no edges digging into your hand as you cut down through a hard cheese. At the tip of the cutting end are two asymmetrical prongs to pick your cheese up with. Again it is recommended to wash by hand and immediately dried off to avoid soap staying on the blade. You can put it in the dishwasher but not with other iron or steel products.
I am a bit of a cheese monster so was thrilled to have such a stylish board and knife to use when serving cheese to guests (or just eating it on my own). As well as looking nice the board is a good size (if a tad heavy) and the ergonomic cheese knife makes cutting even slices easier. I have found cleaning and maintaining it straight forward, although it is a tab cumbersome. It is bulky and I tend to store it in its box and keep it on its side, inside a cupboard; otherwise it would take up too much shelf space and then I would put something on top of it and then not bother to use it so much as I would then need to rearrange the shelves! When researching this review I checked the Georg Jensen UK website for stockists and noted that this is quite a pricey product. As much as I love it I don't think I would have paid £95 for a cheese board and knife! Obviously I recommend this product as it is beautifully designed and of an excellent quality (plus it was a gift so price was not a consideration for me) and would suit fans of contemporary Scandinavian design. Whether you think it is worth the price it is up to you.
