Ikea Bonus Cutlery Set
Advantages: cheap, nice design
Disadvantages: dangerous - bit of metal flake off, went rusty in the dishwasher
I bought this Ikea Bonus cutlery set as a short term stop gap cutlery set. All of our stuff was in storage between moves and I needed some cheap basics to tide us over, cutlery being one of those basics.
This is a 16 piece cutlery set for the absolute bargain price of £1.59. The cutlery set is comprised of 4 of each of knives, forks, spoons and teaspoons. The cutlery is made of stainless steel, and it is dishwasher safe.
First the positives:
This is a really good price for a set of cutlery, I bet you would stuggle to beat this. It is quite a sleek and simply designed set, the forks in particular are quite unusual looking with their three triangular prongs. It certainly doesn't look like the whole set cost just £1.59. The cutlery is certainly very comfortable to hold in your hands whilst eating your meal. I think that the look and the feel and the price of this cutlery set will mean that it is perfect for many people - however just not for us.
Now the negatives:
All of the items in the cutlery set had very very sharp edges, in fact pieces of the metal kept flaking off. This did get better over the time we used them i.e. less bits flaking off, but even so various items in the cutlery set were actually dangerous I thought. The forks were definately the worst offenders.
All of the items in the cutlery set went rusty in the dishwasher, the cutlery is claimed to be dishwasher safe, but each time they were put in the dishwasher more and more rust spots appeared.
We did end up using the cutlery set for a month untill our stuff arrived, at the end of the month however I was glad to put the cutlery in the bin! I certainly wouldn't buy this cutlery set again, if I needed a short term stop gap set again I'd spend a bit more money and hopefully get better quality. I think that this is definately a case of 'you get what you pay for!'
Summary: Cheap if you are on a budget, beware it's not good quality though
