Advantages: Superb quality and style.
Disadvantages: Expensive
Sabatier is a name very familier today to chefs. My brother trained as a chef and incidentally introduced me to Sabatier. Sabatier are a very prestigious French company who have for more than 150 years supplied us with the top quality kitchen knives we have all come to expect from a company like Sabatier.
The sabatier family now several generations on still forge knives today from the same residence as their ancestors. Quality is the key factor that has kept this family built company at the top of their field. Only knives forged in the Thiers region of france can carry the Sabatier name. All Sabatier knives are forged from one piece of steel, the blade, bolster and tang. The blade itself has a high sheen and the handle is black with three silver rivets, they are very light and fit nicely into the hand. They are ofcourse sharp so do be careful, you will be so pleased with your new knives you will wonder how you ever managed to slice and dice without them.
So what do you get?
A five piece knife set, with a sustainable rubberwood knife block.
Vegetable knife
All purpose 6inch knife
Cooks knife
Carver knife
Bread knife,
The bread knife is the only knife with a serrated edge. The other knives all have a smooth edge and in order to keep the knives sharp you will need to purchase a sharpening tool. We use our knives everyday at home and on average would need to sharpen them atleast once a week.
You can purchase sharpening tools from various stores, Amazon have a complete range;
Masterclass Acero sharpening tool 20cm(8") from £6.97
Kitchen devil professional sharpening steel £16.97
Wusthof classic 26cm diamond knife sharpener £34.99
These are just a few of the other brands of sharpening tools available on the market and as you can see they vary quite considerably on price.
You can ofcourse go for a Sabatier sharpening tool, but this will come at a price.
Sabatier 10" oval steel high-carbon steel, with black wood handle. £35.52
Sabatier 12" oval steel high-carbon steel, with black wood handle. £44.40
Sabatier are so sure of their quality they offer a 25 year guarantee as standard. Currently Argos are selling the knives with block and a free end grain chopping board for £84.79
They will make a nice addition to any kitchen and fit neatly on the worktop. They are very stylish and clean very easily with abit of soapy water. Sabatier state that they are dishwasher safe, this just means the knives will not damage the dishwasher, it does not mean the knives/blades will not be damaged by the process of being in a dishwasher. My advice would be to wash only by hand, especially if you wish them to stand the test of time.
One word of warning, knives cannot be sold to persons under the age of 18.
Summary: The best of the best in kitchen knives
