Since moving out of my Mum's house, I have only ever had two decent knives and both of those are ones that I 'borrowed' from my Mum, I just never gave them back because they are so good. Other than that though, my husband and I have terrible knives that are absolutely useless at times. We've wanted a really good knife set for a long time now but as they're expensive, we've been putting off buying one. While having a browse in Sainsbury's after Christmas, we saw the Taylors Eye Witness 5 Piece Dexterity Coloured Knife Block on sale for half price. Usually, this knife set would cost £40 but we got it for £20 which I think is a really reasonable price for a knife set.
The knives come in a black box with a really colourful picture on the front. The reason that the picture is colouring is because the knives themselves are extremely colourful. Instead of being a very plain, black and stainless steel knives, each knife in this set is a different colour. However, the pictures of the knives on the box don't necessarily represent the colours of the knives inside.
The set contains: 7.5"/19cm chef's knife 7.5"/19cm bread knife 7.5"/19cm carving knife 5"/13cm all-purpose knife 3.5"/9cm paring knife Knife block
The knives come in a lovely stand which is mostly made from acrylic. The base is black and then has clear acrylic holders for each knife. This part of the stand is upright and each knife has a separate holder which is nicely splayed out. Each knife can be seen clearly and each is easy to grab hold of as they aren't all bunched together. Each knife also fits precisely into its own slot so you can't put them in different ones.
Taylor's Eye Witness is a company based in Sheffield (the city of steel) and this is also where the knives are made. The blades are non-stick and have a Zirconia blades which are supposed to ensure that they stay sharper for longer. The knives also have soft grip handles which makes them comfortable to hold and use. My hand fits around each handle really nicely and the design is much better than that of a regular kitchen knife. Not only is the design good but these knives are also very sharp. The blades are fantastic and better than any other knife I have ever used. The bread knife, for example, cuts though thick French bread with one motion, rather than having to saw through it. The cutting motion for each knife is smooth and fast which I really like.
The knives can be washed in a dishwasher although we always wash them by hand as we don't own a dishwasher. They are very easy to clean and most of the time, they only need a quick wipe with a cloth. We haven't needed to scrub anything from the blades yet and I hope we never will.
Taylor's Eye Witness advise you to sharpen these knives regularly (they also sell a sharpener) and to use wooden chopping boards rather than plastic to help keep the blades as sharp as possible. The knives also come with a 12 month guarantee.
Overall, I couldn't be happier with these knives. I got them at a great price and they're fantastic. I would certainly buy them again as gifts and I would also buy more products from this brand.
When I moved into my new home, we realised just how many knives we had - it was ridiculous! So, we decided we would get rid of all but two extremely high quality ones, and get a nice knife block instead, to keep clutter to a minimum. We purchased a set of coloured knives from Taylors Eye Witness, as the bright and funky colours were very eye catching.
Our set is actually slightly different to the one above - instead of three knives in one row and three in another as pictures, it has only five knives, and they are presented all in a row in the clear holder in size order. The holder itself, which is clear acrylic with a black acrylic base, required a tiny but of assembly, but it was literally the work of seconds. I find the holder a great way of keeping my knives organised - I always know where they are, and it is much safer than my previous system of rumaging around blindly in drawers.
The knives are very colourful, and this contains the basics - A large (purple) cooks knife, a (blue) utility knife, a (pink) bread knife, a small orange knife, and a small (green)paring knife. The colours are bright and vibrant, and the blades I have found to perform well - they don't feel cheap and flimsy in use, and the bread knife in particular I have been impressed with. These are made of coloured metal, and I have noticed one knife after several months of use has a small ding where the metal is showing through, although this hasn't affected the working of the knife in any way.
I'm not sure if these are dishwasher safe, but have found them easy to clean, and the colour doesn't scratch when washing with soap and hot water.
The only downside, not so much for me but for people with young children perhaps is they can look very attractive to little ones - I have had one small visitor ask if they were toys, so those with curious toddlers may wish to avoid these.
I believe I paid around £20 for my set in The Range, which is a fair price - they are widely available online though, so do look around for the best deals.
Overall, I'm impressed with this little knife set, 5 stars.
Taylors Eye Witness 6 Piece Kitchen Knife Set
I was recently given this set of knives as a gift and so far am delighted with them.
The company has apparently been knife making since the early 19th Century, so I immediately think they must at least know what they are doing. A little look at other knives in the range convinced me that the will be sharp enough to cut and not just a novelty. They also come with a 12 month guarantee.
The knives and stand come Packaged in a box brightly illustrated with the knives and on the sides of the box all of the information I Might need including the colour of each knife, just to help me if I make a mistake. The knives themselves are packaged separately from the stand but thankfully there is no setting up to do; I simply take out the knives and slot them into the holders in the stand. Because each knife fits precisely into its own allotted space, it's impossible to get them into the wrong slot and so they always look neat and sleek.
The base is sturdily made from acrylic and one of the design features I like is the fact that I can rotate it to get to the knife I want. Actually, at first it was more of a novelty for me because its not so big that its a burden to reach across the base to get to the knife I want. The base is see through which is actually a very handy feature. I am not especially adept in the kitchen and don't do so much cooking that I know my knives well but this way I can see at a glance the type and length if knife I need without having to get each one out in turn.
The set contains 6 knives: 19cm Cooks Knife (Purple), 19cm Bread knife (Pink), 19cm Carving knife (Blue), 13cm All purpose knife (Red), 13cm Serrated Utility knife (Orange) and a 9cm Paring knife (Green). The blade of each knife is the same as the handle so its all very jolly when i look at the knife stand. Each knife has Non-stick coated, easy to clean blade and the handles are ergonomically designed and not overly rigid so its a really comfortable grip.
The knives can be washed in the dishwasher. To wash the stand I wipe it with a damp cloth, as it does show up any finger marks, so it needs a wipe after a few spins. It is recommended that they are sharpened regularly and that wooden chopping boards are used to limit blunting but I have found that they stay razon sharp.
I believe the set of knives can be bought for about the £30 mark from various websites but this is a reduced price and full RRP is more expensive than this.
A great set if knives which jolly up my kitchen.
The revolving base turns easily and doesn't snag. The knives themselves are comfortable to hold and non slip, amd they really do as they promise. They come really sharp and after 6 months I haven't had to sharpen them at all. Admittedly I don't cook all the time but I do cut vegetables, bread and meat on a regular basis.
Great knife set
