Halfords Girls Bike Streamers
Advantages: My daughter loves them, fit easily into the handlebar grips, don't lose too many strips
Disadvantages: Expensive for such a small novelty item
When we bought Hollie her bike last year it was pink (of course, this is Hollie we're talking about) but quite basic looking, I realised it needed prettying up straightaway so after dropping her at school one day I took a trip to Halfords to see what I could get. I was thinking new handlebar grips and maybe a tinkly little bell, but when I spotted these streamers I decided to get these instead (mainly because I didn't know whether handlebar grips came in a one-size-fits-all design or if I should have actually measured the bike before trying to buy things for it!).
The streamers are a very simple idea and without even describing them I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about, regardless of the worse than useless photo Dooyoo have decided to use. They are made up of lots of slim plastic/foil strips which have been attached to a circular piece of plastic which has a rigid 'post' sticking out of it, the post simply needs pushing through the rubber of the handlebar grip (sometimes there is a pre-made hole, but on Hollie's bike Mark had to make a hole to attach the streamers). It's an excellent fit, despite lots of riding time the streamers have never fallen out or became wobbly and doing a quick comparison between several different brands of bike streamers I can say the plastic post looks fairly universal on all of them so if your handlebar grips already have a hole then these should fit in it!
The streamers themselves are in varying shades of pink, purple and blue with all three colours looking fantastic, especially on sunny days when the light reflects off them as Hollie is pedaling along. Touching them reminds me of the tape you'd find in cassettes (ask your parents, kids!) although the material is a little heavier as the strips don't waft in the wind as well as cassette tape used to when we (umm) threw it into the branches of trees. When Hollie is cycling however the breeze does cause the strips of plastic to flow in the direction of the wind and this creates a lovely girly effect, the only problem being that she often gets so wrapped up in watching the streamers that she forgets to watch the pavement in front of her and they've caused her to tumble off her bike at least three times that I know of!
When the streamers were brand new I noticed a few came out as Hollie was cycling, I'm assuming these were loose in the first place though as since then they all seem to have stayed put and there definitely doesn't look like there are any bald patches at all.
Hollie is really happy with them and this very simple idea has transformed the appearance of her bike, I think the £6 price tag is a little excessive for such a basic product - but then anything related to cycling (and especially kids bikes) is always surprisingly high priced I've found.
Summary: A great way to add some colour to your little girl's bike
