Nathan Reflective Ankle Band
Advantages: 3 reflective colours. Adjustable strap. Safety. Doubles as cycle clip. Not sold in pairs.
Disadvantages: Uncomfortable. Unsexy. Price.
I regularly cycle to and from work, and during the summer months this doesn't pose a problem as it's light out when I leave and come home, but in the winter it's generally dark when I leave and generally dark when I come home - and therefore I like to take steps to ensure that I am seen by motorists when I'm cycling at night. I do have a reflective vest and head and tail lights on my bike, but my partner also bought me (and encouraged me to wear!) some Nathan Reflective Ankle Bands to help me seen even better. I don't know what my partner paid for these bands, but they are currently being sold on Amazon for £7.95 with free delivery. I actually think this price is a little high for them and I think they could probably come down a lot in price to be a little more affordable. Bear in mind that they are sold in single bands (i.e. not pairs) and this makes virtually zero sense to me since I can't see anyone buying a band for one leg and not the other!
The Nathan Reflective Ankle Band is made of a non stretchy fabric which then has 3 bands of different colours stitched onto it. The three colours are yellow, silver and amber and they are all highly reflective and supposedly can be seen from 1500 feet if there is any light shining on it. Certainly, they are very visible and I do believe it makes you extra visible to traffic when you're cycling in the dark - as long as there are lights around for the bands to reflect. The bands are adjustable and are designed to sit over trousers and so they also double up as a cycle clip. They do up with velcro and are certainly secure once they are done up and won't accidentally come undone. The only thing is that I find them a bit stiff and therefore a little uncomfortable and so I think something could be done to soften them up a little.
Now to the major drawback of them......and that's that you look a wally. There is no getting away from the fact that these bands are not sexy and they will make you look a little ridiculous. The good thing though is that you will only really need to wear them in the dark and so no one will see your face!!
Summary: They do the job - but they look ridiculous.
