Oxford Hoop Key Cable Lock
Advantages: Handy enough
I have started riding my bike again. I have finally started to try and loose my baby weight from 10 months ago now and I thought getting back on my bike would be a really good idea. Its not often that I leave it locked up as I don't use it to commute or anything like that but when I do I think its a good idea to have a lock on it.
The lock I bought for my bike was a Oxford hoop bicycle lock. I had one of these style years ago when I was younger and it always worked well for me so when it came to buying another lock this was the type I was looking for. I have tried those hard metal locks in the past but I found them so awkward to carry around with you when you are on your bike. I don't often carry a bag with me so you either had to hang the metal lock over the handlebars which made a noise and often fell off or you just had to carry it which was not fun.
This cable lock is easy to carry around with you so you have it when you need to use it. As the name suggests the lock is just made of a length of cable which is covered in plastic to make it more comfortable. I usually carry the cable around my neck and don't really even notice it when I am cycling. The cable is not amazingly long, it measures 600cm x 10mm in diameter but I find it is big enough to wrap around my frame and then through whatever item I decide to secure it around.
The lock then comes apart when you open it with a key and clicks back into the other side to secure it. Its very simple and easy to tie up your bike with this. The lock came with two keys which I keep on my keyring so always have it with me. This lock is perfect for my purpose. I hardly ever leave my bike but when I do it will probably only be the pub garden which we can cycle to. I leave my bike in the garden while we go inside to order our drinks and then come back again. I think the lock provides a bit of security and stops the chancers from seeing a bike and thinking they can just wheel it away. If they see a lock on I think they are more inclined to pass by my bike and perhaps steal another one. This lock probably can easily be cut apart if someone had some heavy duty wire cutters and unlike a metal lock would be fairly easy to tamper with. If I was commuting and leaving my bike in a public place then I probably wouldn't use this lock but for me its great and was cheap too at less than £10 so is a lock I recommend.
