Worth checking the front and rear fixings prior to purchase

We bought a set of Raleigh Flinger Mudguards to fit to the Apollo Mountain Bike we bought. We really ought to have thought about the mudguards issue earlier as we could have had a set fitted for free at the time of purchase and just have paid for the actual mudguards.

Nevermind, once we found out that any use of the bike in wet conditions resulted in splashes and sploshes all over the place, in rather unsightly places, we invested in a set of these Raleigh Flinger Quick Fit Mudguards. They set us back £7.95 which didn't seem too bad when we compared prices, as you got both the front and rear mudguard included in the set.

Our Raleigh Flinger Quick Fit Mudguard Set seemed a good choice at the time and in essence there is nothing much wrong with the set at all, however, as ever if we had put a bit more thought into how we were going to attach the guards to the bike, we may have chosen a different set.

The rear set fitted on to the back of the bike relatively easily. Not that I did that, I left that to the OH, who seemed to manage to fit the rear guard in the end. I thought it was easy as I was on tea making duty. Once on the rear guard did seem to cover a good proportion of the back tyre, which is what we wanted.

The rear mudguard in particular is good as it has reflective panels on which can be of great benefit if you do a lot of night time cycling. It also looks like not one but two mudguards due to the way its been modelled which is rather funky. Its adjustable too. The front mudguard is smaller and this is where we have had some fitting issues. We found that the bike we wanted to fit the front mudguard to wasn't the best shaped one to have picked for the set we bought.

The front of the mountain bike, has no real space to allow fitting of the guard at the right height level, which is mostly due to the way that the two parts of the main frame fit together at the front support. As yet we haven't managed to fit the front guard on in a suitable way and this is a bit of a shame as although most water sploshes do come from the rear bike tyre, you do still get some from the front in wetter weather. So at the moment the front guard is awaiting fitting by the OH who is awaiting divine inspiration as to how to best attach the thing.

      *********************************************************
In summary the Raleigh Flinger Quick Fit Mudguard Set is a good product and could be fitted to most bikes with 24 inch or 26 inch tyres. The rear guard we fitted works well and covers a good amount of the tyre. The front one is a work in progress, but thats more due to our bike frame than the product itself.

To rate the Raleigh Flinger Quick Fit Mudguard Set I feel that a rating of 3 stars is about right at this time. The rear mudguard is rather handy as it can be adjusted to cover more or less of your cycle wheel, depending on the size of the tyres and the road conditions which is helpful.
