Samui High Pressure Mini Pump
Advantages: Lightweight, compact, pumps to 100psi
Disadvantages: No frame mount
Regular readers of my reviews will know that I'm quite into cycling, and when I first bought my road bike, I was quite apprehensive about all the accessories that are needed to go with a bike. The bikes are expensive enough as it is, but you need so much more than 'just a bike'. This can be as cheap or expensive as you like though, although there does seem to be quite a lot of snobbery in the cycling community as I've swiftly come to realise! When I bought my £8 pump, a friend who is seriously into cycling asked which one I had opted for. When I told him it was the Samui mini pump he looked at me like I'd just spat in his eye! This apparently wasn't the 'right option', and I should have opted for a much better one.... Hmmm, well I 100% disagree and this is why.....
The compact and lightweight mini pump by Samui, is, for me, the perfect mini pump. Fitting perfectly in a camelbak, the small size and lightness of the pump means it's perfect for cycling as it doesn't weigh you down or get in the way. The only negative to the pump that I can find (and this isn't a major issue as I'm able to store in my bag), is that it doesn't have a frame mount, so this does need to be considered before purchasing it if you don't want to store it in a bag. My husband reckons that it could easily be mounted on the back of a frame under the seat somewhere using a bit of DIY, however I'm happy to transport mine in my bag and this doesn't cause me any problems.
The pump works quickly and effectively and soon gives you the promised 100psi which is pretty impressive for something so compact. When I first purchased it, I was dubious about its 100 psi claims; however it really does achieve this and doesn't take long at all to get a tyre inflated to this level. I had used a friend's pump before this one and it took me much longer to reach the same types of inflation levels, and it seemed much more hard work than this pump. His was also much more expensive....!
To use the pump is really quick and straight forward, not at all fiddly. It doesn't require too much effort to get to the right inflation levels (obviously 'some' effort is required!). It's easy to fit and lock into place too. The head is also easily interchangeable between Schrader valves and Presta, making it much more versatile for users.
The pump also comes with a needle so you are able to inflate sports balls.
A cracking little pump, which I'm more than happy to recommend. I can't see why you would want to spend any more than you have to on a cycling accessory such as a bike pump, when you can get something that works fantastically well for under a tenner.
