Topeak Combo Highlites USB
Disadvantages: long time to charge
I bought these lights for my bike that I purchased last summer on the cycle to work scheme. I bought new kit including these lights. I was attracted to this pair because of their ability to be charged by USB rather than use batteries. When I first turned them on I was really impressed with how bright they are and consider it a really good purchase. The only disadvantage is that they take around five hours to charge. It would have been better having an adapter that plugs into the mains as I do not want my laptop on for this long. Luckily my iphone charger came with a plug adapter for a USB lead so I can charge the lights up using this. Charging it up is much easier than resorting to batteries so I think I made a good choice in the end.
==Price and availability==
The cost of this pair of lights is quite expensive although you can actually pay over two hundred pounds for some bike lights so in the grand scheme of things they are probably averagely priced! They are superb quality though and they are exceptionally bright. I paid £43.00 for the pair and I bought them from Halfords.
The lights are light but they are quite large. There are four LEDs spaced out across the front of the light. LED (for those that are wondering) stands for Light Emitting Diodes; these are state of the art light technology. They are exceptionally bright and use a lot less energy. The front light is white and the back light emits a bright red light. The lights are so bright and pierce through the darkness allowing you to be visible from a great distance. They are waterproof and made from a rubberised material that prevents water getting inside the light and corroding it. There is a mini USB port at the side of each light and a cable is supplied. This can be plugged into your lap top or anything else that uses USB in order to charge it up. It takes around 5 hours to charge the light and this will then last for around 10 hours / 15 hours depending on whether you have constant light or flashing light setting on. To turn the light on and off there is a button on the top that is under the rubber and you just need to push it down once to change the setting. To fit the lights there is a rubber grip at the back that can be tightened or slackened and fits over the handlebar. The back light has the same fitting as the front and can be slipped on the frame under the seat.
You need good lights on a bike and it is illegal to cycle at night without them, not to mention extremely dangerous. I do not go out late on my bike but at dusky evening times it can be quite dull so a light is needed so that traffic are aware of my presence. I prefer the flashing setting as it will draw more attention than a constant light although if you tune into the flashing it can be quite annoying as you cycle along. The lights are really bright and if you wanted to use the front light as a torch, it would help you see in the dark as it lights up a large space around itself. I consider these lights to be worth the money and to be honest they do not need charging too often. I do not like to be caught short so I tend to charge them before they run completely low. I wish they would achieve full charge quicker as five hours is quite a long time but it works out much cheaper than buying double As.
Summary: A good investment
