You will have by now of course heard of Viruses and Cookies but what are they and what do they do?

A virus is a very small piece of machine code ( Program ) that can cause various problems then replicate themselves, fasten itself onto emails you send, then travel around the world in a matter of hours.

In the main most cookies don't do any harm and are used by manufacturers and sellers to send them information from your computer as regards your shopping habits as to where you have been on the Internet, this lets them know that you have been on their site, which I feel is an invasion of privacy (BT internet have just had their hand smacked for a similar thing they tried recently on their internet service).

Viruses on the other hand, go from the silly ones to the down right dangerous, at best erroneous messages can appear which do not harm anything, at worst information can be taken from your computer about your personal details and banking which then is used to remove money from your bank account. Another problem is that other people can use your computer to send Spam. Have you ever received the message that an Email could not be sent for one reason or another? But you never sent it in the first place!

How do you know if you have either? 99% of the time you don't, its only when you have a very nasty virus or cookie which can cause major problems

So what do you do? You have to get a Virus and Internet checker and there are a lot out there, some are free some are not. I have had a computer now for 26 years and in my time used many different ones some good some bad.
Around Christmas time my Internet security licence was running out, I had to renew it, this was one of the best-known Internet protections, but the 2007 version slowed my computer down on start-up and caused other problems. I looked around, read some reviews, Kaspersky had one of the best write ups, it has a number of features, the main one is that the virus data base is upgraded on a more than daily basis which is important as viruses get written every hour. The loading time on start up is very fast and I do not notice it when it is running, except when it has a problem, it then lets you know what the problem is i.e. someone trying to gain access to your computer or when you download your mail, it lets you see who they are from before down loading, so you can delete them before it can cause a problem. It can be fine tuned to how you would like it to run or the beginner can just load in and it works fine. They have a backup team who if you email them are very helpful and reply to all your emails.

If you take time to read reviews on internet security, Kaspersky ( this version checks both internet and for viruses) usually comes out top and finds most viruses then any other.

You can download a month's free trial to try it before you buy or you can buy and download it ( you do not need a hard copy as you just down load from Kaspersky ) and when a new version comes out you can upgrade free providing your licence is up to date so you always have the latest version.
