Advantages: Wonderful for gifts, Unusual items for sale, Choice of coffee shops/restaurants
Disadvantages: Quite expensive
The writers of Are you Being Served must have visited Jarrolds at some time in their lives. It's such a lovely old-fashioned type of department store. They've revamped it on several occasions over the years, but it always gives that aura of timelessness. I always make a point of visiting Jarrolds when I'm in Norwich - I live and work about 5 miles outside. It's not a cheap department store but it's like entering an Aladdin's cave. You can buy everything from books and stationery (which is what Jarrolds are primarily known for around the globe) to three piece suites, wedding dresses and kitchenware. I tend to start in the basement - the most fantastic cut glass and bone china can be found there, together with other kitchenware items. I normally end up buying a little "treat" for myself from their kitchen goodies - delicious jams and chutneys (and not your run of the mill Robertsons or Hartleys either!); these are proper "just like Mum used to make" jams and chutneys. They're quite expensive, but lovely for a treat (or as a present). Ater the basement, my next favourite floor is the ground floor - I spend hours looking through all the books and the smellies. Lovely, natural, old-fashioned smellies - Lily of the Valley, Rose and Lavender all spring to mind. Again, pricey but, if you're looking for that extra special gift for Christmas or Birthday, it's an ideal place to go. Above that you'll find a furniture department, clothing, toys and more, and once you've finished looking around all of those, you can take your choice of no less than three coffee shops/restaurants. It's a FANTASTIC shop - if ever you're visiting Norwich, please give it a look. It's very close to Norwich's historic market place too so, if you overspend in Jarrolds, you can always balance that by picking up a few bargains on the market!!
