>>Me and My Skin<<
I've never had serious problems with my skin apart from the time when I reacted badly to the medication I was on and broke out in acne. Normally my skin behaves itself quite well but these winter months do take their toll on my complexion. This means it is difficult for me to know what sort of products to buy. Sometimes my skin will be dry and at other times I have combination skin. This is where the T-Zone (forehead, nose and chin) become oily and can break out in spots whereas the rest of the face is normal or dry.
Last year I went to a skin-care clinic and received a sample of Dermalogica's Medicated Clearing Gel. There was enough in the sachet for several uses and I absolutely loved the product for those 'combination' times when my skin would flare up or break out in spots. However when I saw the price of the actual product I was completely put off; £24.90 for 59ml. Well as much as I liked the product I simply could not afford to spend this much money at the time so I went back to using cheaper products.
Well one of my kind friends must have taken note because after I spent a day complaining that my skin was out of control, I was delighted to find that she'd brought me this for Christmas (apparently she had a shopping spree while in the Christmas spirit!). I have been using the product occasionally since then when I feel my skin needs it and have been very impressed with the results so far.
>>Who are Dermalogica?<<
Dermalogica are a skin-care company that operates worldwide but they are probably less-known than most brands such as Clinique and Lush, so I thought I'd fill you in on them first.
Dermalogica is the skin care system that has been researched for years, and then developed, by The International Dermal Institute. They claim to be known worldwide (they operate in 40 different countries) as the "professionals choice" They are founded on the belief that caring for your skin is not a luxury but as everyday as brushing your teeth, which seems pretty fair in my opinion.
Dermalogica's intentions are similar to some other skin care brands; they want to create products that give results rather than a load of overblown hype and fancy packaging. I think this is genuinely what they believe and not just something they made up to try and impress people, their consultants seem to enjoy their job because they know that the products and advice they give people will actually work and both of the consultants I have seen told me to come back if the product wasn't effective after a few weeks.
Dermalogica produce a range of products for different skin types on which consultants will advise you. If you want a free consultation they will be happy to oblige or you can take a look at their website www.dermalogica.com.
>>About the Product<<
Medicated Clearing Gel is an overnight treatment designed to help clear skin while you sleep. I love the idea of overnight treatments because you don't have to worry about whether they're working you just put it on go to sleep and wake up in the morning to admire the results (hopefully!)
Before you go to sleep you simply apply a thin layer of the treatment where needed and allow it to dry
The product is medicated with a 2% Salicylic Acid treatment that helps to clear existing acne blemishes and also destroys bacteria, deep-cleans the follicles (the tiny hair pores in which oil and dirt can become trapped causing spots) and regulates sebum (oil) production to prevent future breakouts. This makes the product ideal for skin that is acne-prone but is also suitable for combination skin users who want an effective treatment that will work relatively quickly and improve the skin's condition.
Salicylic acid is used commonly in spot-treatments and skin treatments which refine the condition of the skin because it is an effective exfoliator. This treatment should be gentle enough for sensitive skins but if you're in any doubt you can talk to the consultant about it and they'll be able to recommend the best products for you.
Dermalogica use only the finest ingredients available and all their products are non-comedogenic, this means they won't clog your pores; believe it or not some skin treatments actually do this. Also they contain no occlusive mineral oil or lanolin, no irritating artificial colours or fragrance, and no drying alcohol or formaldehyde. These are basically the bad things that some skin care companies put in their products to make them effective temporarily.
The ingredients in this product include rosemary, tea-tree oil, thyme and essential oils of orange, sage and ginger. If you are worried about allergies a full list of ingredients of the products is available from the website, catalogue or from a Dermalogica consultant.
>>Does it Work?<<
I can't praise this product highly enough because it really has sorted my skin out and so quickly too. I only needed to apply a very small amount for it to work. The 59ml bottle cost £24.90 and I'd say I used about 2-3ml for each treatment so although the product is very expensive from the results it has produced for me I would have to say it is worth it, of course you wouldn't know if it works for you until you've tried it.
The product also smells really nice, not like it is medicated at all. It has a fresh, herby smell that is not overpowering at all.
I've been using the product for just over two weeks now but I haven't used it every night and it seems to have sorted my skin out. However most of the bottle is still left so I can keep if for future use because there is no expiry date on the products.
>>My Verdict<<
I believe this product would work for most skins, except severe acne, in which case you'd need to see a doctor. For combination skins or minor skin problems this is very good.
Obviously you aren't going to want to rush out and buy this simply form reading this review but I would recommend anyone who is interested goes to see a Dermalogica consultant who will be able to recommend products for your specific skin type and will give you two or three samples of each recommended product to try. This way you can see if they work for you before rushing out and buying them.
>>Other Information<<
Dermalogica products are only available from skin care clinics and are not sold in high street stores such as Boots, you can buy online but then you will not be able to try products before buying them. Most towns have a beauticians or skin specialists which will stock these products and give you advice on them. I do not know of any high street stores that stock them.
And one more point to note. If you think this is one just for the ladies then you'd be wrong FHM voted it very highly! It won their BEST GROOMING INNOVATION so don't be scared boys get yourself an effective product!
Thanks for reading!
